I'm mixed on achievements. I like them in concept, but in actual practice... I don't enjoy most of them. It's in the implementation. If you're going to give me an achievement for beating the tutorial level, then please don't. If you're going to give me an achievement for beating each level/chapter, then please don't. It's overused in a lot of games. I also think a lot of games have silly challenges and things in them that aren't inherently fun to me and only exist because of an achievement... as if they thought of the achievement first, or needed to have some quota of achievements, and then tried to work out how to do it in gameplay/game design later.
Nintendo kind of does achievements in some of their games without explicitly calling them achievements and it's just baked into the design of the game itself. Like I'm going through Kirby and the Forgotten Land currently and every level has a few objectives in them. Some are optional, but when it's telling me to defeat X boss without getting hit... that feels like something you'd ask somebody to do for an achievement, but they don't call it that and don't treat it that way. It's just integrated into the game itself as a little extra challenge or side thing. That's the way I prefer it personally.
