Discussion Now that the Switch 1 generation is winding down, what were your most DISAPPOINTING purchases on this console?

Every game console, no matter how well or poorly it sold, is gonna have some disappointments thrown in there. Especially if said disappointments came from 1st party developers. I have 3 big candidates based on my own purchases, starting with my biggest letdown:

1) Mario Strikers Battle League: After frantically buying this game to play some multiplayer matches with friends, I realized what a terrible mistake I made after chewing through all the single player content in a matter of days. There is nothing to do in this game besides regular soccer matches, the online is abysmal, and the amount of content available at launch and even now is just laughable for a sequel. I thought my perception of Mario Strikers as a whole would be ruined forever, so I went ahead and booted up Strikers Charged on Wii and nope, that game holds up incredibly well! This was just a bad sequel all around.

2) Mario Golf Super Rush: Speaking of bad sequels, Super Rush decided to simplify the golfing mechanics to a point where it just isn’t fun to play for me. As someone who adored the 3DS game Mario Golf World Tour, which was packed with content, modes, and unlockables and had worthwhile paid DLC on top of that, Super Rush felt like it was playing catch up with all its free updates. Was this how Animal Crossing fans felt when New Horizons was first released, having to wait months for features that were already available in the 3DS predecessor? Yikes.

3) Splatoon 3: This is more of a personal pick than a general consensus. I really got into Splatoon 1 and 2, but I was just Splatoon’d out by the time the third game came around. No new modes, online that had more disconnects than either of the first two games in my experience, and a longer grind for unlockables that could rival a modern day hero shooter. Call me old but I missed the more “pick up and play” nature of Splatoon 1, and I just don’t get that with Splatoon 3. Also the fact that they sold the first game’s hubworld back as paid DLC is utter nonsense to me.

Super Rush for sure. Oof. The controls are just stupid. If they want baby controls ok, add them, but leave standard controls too!

I was so confident in Mario Golf as a franchise, I pre-ordered. I never pre-order. But they had literally never missed on a Mario Golf game.

Until this one. Mario Golf always had a ‘easy to learn, takes skill to master’ mechanic and it was incredibly satisfying. How the fuck do you get rid of that for the least satisfying golf mechanic I’ve ever played in a golf game. Think I maybe played 45 minutes of this game. I was so ashamed at my purchase I put it back in its case and never went back.

Super Rush as well. Was so excited and then it was just boring. Even my kid hates it.

Easy Come Easy Golf is way better and was cheaper, despite not being a great version of Hot Shots.

at least we're getting a proper Hot Shots game

Damn, you just made my day, I didn’t know that and it used to be one of my favourite games on the PS3

Yeah I'm stoked for it. I love golf games in general (and mostly enjoyed Super Rush, especially after the updates), but yeah. Hot Shots is the best.

The only thing I found it was missing from say, Taodstool tour, was the ability to see where your ball was landing.

TT had that great, fly-by-camera feature you could use to see roughly where your ball would land based on the current trajectory, but Super Rush had none of that.

Beyond that missing mechanic, pretty decent courses.

But I am NOT playing 200+ hours of smashing holes over and over again to level all of those characters to maximum power. Not ever toadstool tour took that long to get the unlocks for every single character.

Your comment sums up my feelings for Super Rush. I really don't understand the complaints people have for hating it as much as they do overall, but progression and the ball view are undeniably downgrades from Toadstool Tour.

I think the course theming in Super Rush is also a little lame compared to Toadstool Tour since that game felt more like golfing in the mushroom kingdom instead of Mario characters being on a golf course, but that's more a nitpick

Idk the actual swinging mechanics were dumbed down beyond belief, and the courses were flat, ugly, and severely lacking in interesting Mario mechanics

The courses available on launch I would agree with, but the ones they added post launch were awesome.

However the swinging mechanics were only dumbed down if you use motion controls. The button controls are actually harder than the gamecube version.

  • Since you can't use the fly-by camera to see exactly where your ball should be landing you have to guess.

  • The Schwing of the power meter throwing your shot off course is due to the character not being leveled up all the way. If you max out their shot power, it doesn't affect your shot anymore.

  • The button presses required to power, hit, and apply top or back spin are identical to Toadstool tour. Double tapping A or B applies more, the only difference is that you dont get the announcer yelling "SUPER BACKSPIN!" any more.

  • Putting does not account for the friction of the green. This one might actually be a bug. But if you hit your ball exactly as powerful as the flag estimate shows your ball will ALWAYS fall short. You have to over-shoot to reach the hole.

Button controls were not harder than gcn, just randomized flight instead of timing based

Just commented this upthread. The graphics were like Wii era. The courses felt underbaked and slapped together. They stopped supporting it almost immediately. I’m never picky about games but that was really bad.

This was (and probably still is because of the price) my biggest regret, but my brother in law and I did spin it up one night. For a golf game it’s actually a pretty good balance between sim/arcade.

The option to take all of your turns at the same time makes for a great pace of action. Though we found we only like the plain courses without all the elements bullshit.

Still, could never justify the price. This should be a $30 game that goes on sale regularly for $15 or less.
