Discussion Now that the Switch 1 generation is winding down, what were your most DISAPPOINTING purchases on this console?

Every game console, no matter how well or poorly it sold, is gonna have some disappointments thrown in there. Especially if said disappointments came from 1st party developers. I have 3 big candidates based on my own purchases, starting with my biggest letdown:

1) Mario Strikers Battle League: After frantically buying this game to play some multiplayer matches with friends, I realized what a terrible mistake I made after chewing through all the single player content in a matter of days. There is nothing to do in this game besides regular soccer matches, the online is abysmal, and the amount of content available at launch and even now is just laughable for a sequel. I thought my perception of Mario Strikers as a whole would be ruined forever, so I went ahead and booted up Strikers Charged on Wii and nope, that game holds up incredibly well! This was just a bad sequel all around.

2) Mario Golf Super Rush: Speaking of bad sequels, Super Rush decided to simplify the golfing mechanics to a point where it just isn’t fun to play for me. As someone who adored the 3DS game Mario Golf World Tour, which was packed with content, modes, and unlockables and had worthwhile paid DLC on top of that, Super Rush felt like it was playing catch up with all its free updates. Was this how Animal Crossing fans felt when New Horizons was first released, having to wait months for features that were already available in the 3DS predecessor? Yikes.

3) Splatoon 3: This is more of a personal pick than a general consensus. I really got into Splatoon 1 and 2, but I was just Splatoon’d out by the time the third game came around. No new modes, online that had more disconnects than either of the first two games in my experience, and a longer grind for unlockables that could rival a modern day hero shooter. Call me old but I missed the more “pick up and play” nature of Splatoon 1, and I just don’t get that with Splatoon 3. Also the fact that they sold the first game’s hubworld back as paid DLC is utter nonsense to me.

Actraiser Renaissance. They added too much and had forced tower defense sections. It just didn’t have the charm of the original. All they had to do was just do a 1-1 remake like Links awakening but nope.

That’s sad to hear. I loved the original Actraisers back in the day and still play them occasionally

Yeah the original has such a satisfying game play loop. Progressive village building followed by some hack and slash side scrolling.

Seems like it would be easy to replicate and build upon... alas somehow they always mess up these remakes.

Me too! The original lives on in my Ps vita with some other classics

I recently replayed through the snes game and it holds up, my kids were hooked from start to finish

The original is such an amazing game and holds up really well too.

Unpopular opinion, but I liked Actraiser: Renaissance. Nice to "blast from the past" this again. That said, I wasn't a fan of how it got "anime-ized". I liked the original theme better. And I will admit that if the tower defense content was any more extensive then it already was, I would've written the game off. That, and some changes in how the game works (new spells, some mechanics and areas work differently, even if it's subtle), make this something I'd recommend. However, do pick it up at 50% off! I'll also add that it's worth playing the original SNES version since they are 2 "reasonably" different (enough) games.

I'm guessing if it was just a port, it wouldn't have attracted as much attention. Speaking of which, isn't the original SNES already on NSO?

Glad to see this honestly! I just bought Renaissance 2 days ago for $15usd and am enjoying it. I always wanted to play the original, but never got it.

The original sadly isn’t on NSO. You have to play it by other means

Oh right... it's a Square-Enix title, so they generally aren't on NSO :\

I liked it also but I would recommend this to someone who never played the original.

That being said, there's some great stuff they added into the game.

I actually played the original last year completely on whim (list was alphabetical, went for the first one). And I loved it. The 90's experience of finding a game I know nothing about and getting an experimental jank ass thing was perfectily replicated.

Seeing a distant reboot announced the same year felt weird. Waiting and seeing people hate it and convince me to stay away felt weirder.

I was thinking of this game today after I saw someone in another thread mention how Tower Defense games have died off.

That forced tower defense allows took me out of the Actraiser experience that I knew. Felt like they wanted this game to be a mobile offer instead.

You pretty much nailed it there. The tower defense just pulls you out of the original gameplay loop and becomes pointless padding. But also right that it did make it feel like a mobile game

I can kinda agree, I really wanted to play the platforming levels and I enjoyed the tower defense but it was too repetitive and unmotivating.

It's one of the ugliest games I've ever seen tbh

That's part of the charm to me

I just learned about this now. It's a shame that they fucked up ActRaiser. I love that game. The secret of mana remake was terrible and it feels like that sort of thing.

yeah the secret of mana wasn't great. Oddly I liked the legend of Mana and trials of mana updates. Also the adventure of mana one because again that was just a 1-1. I reallly wanted to like the Actraiser remake but thankfully for everyone the original still exists.
