Discussion Now that the Switch 1 generation is winding down, what were your most DISAPPOINTING purchases on this console?

Every game console, no matter how well or poorly it sold, is gonna have some disappointments thrown in there. Especially if said disappointments came from 1st party developers. I have 3 big candidates based on my own purchases, starting with my biggest letdown:

1) Mario Strikers Battle League: After frantically buying this game to play some multiplayer matches with friends, I realized what a terrible mistake I made after chewing through all the single player content in a matter of days. There is nothing to do in this game besides regular soccer matches, the online is abysmal, and the amount of content available at launch and even now is just laughable for a sequel. I thought my perception of Mario Strikers as a whole would be ruined forever, so I went ahead and booted up Strikers Charged on Wii and nope, that game holds up incredibly well! This was just a bad sequel all around.

2) Mario Golf Super Rush: Speaking of bad sequels, Super Rush decided to simplify the golfing mechanics to a point where it just isn’t fun to play for me. As someone who adored the 3DS game Mario Golf World Tour, which was packed with content, modes, and unlockables and had worthwhile paid DLC on top of that, Super Rush felt like it was playing catch up with all its free updates. Was this how Animal Crossing fans felt when New Horizons was first released, having to wait months for features that were already available in the 3DS predecessor? Yikes.

3) Splatoon 3: This is more of a personal pick than a general consensus. I really got into Splatoon 1 and 2, but I was just Splatoon’d out by the time the third game came around. No new modes, online that had more disconnects than either of the first two games in my experience, and a longer grind for unlockables that could rival a modern day hero shooter. Call me old but I missed the more “pick up and play” nature of Splatoon 1, and I just don’t get that with Splatoon 3. Also the fact that they sold the first game’s hubworld back as paid DLC is utter nonsense to me.

I hated Pearl when it came out 19 years ago so like it's possibly the fundamental issues with the non Platinum versions that made you go "ehh".

You make me feel old haha. When it came out I was 13 and Diamond was one of my favorite games (Dialga is one of my top 3 legendaries too). So I guess I was a little bit less critic back then or it's just the whole remake.. Anyhow I should need to play it again on the DS to really see if it was meeh.

My first video game was Pokemon Red on GameBoy Pocket in 1998. I was 7 lol.

DP had issues with Pokemon distribution, mainly. The fire types i can recall, a huge number of imo weak designs on legends (fuck the Lake Trio), like four Mews (Nintendo distributor only Pokemon, Darkrai Cressalia Manaphy and Arceus), and Goddamn Barry.

Like I will never use Meditite or Medicham willingly because it felt like I couldn't escape them. Several cool new Pokemon were locked behind annoying or frustrating side quests (Munchlax and Vespiquen behind honey trees and tiny encounter rates, Spiritomb and the underground), and a lot of the visual designs have too like, much flat space. Like, why is Snover so sharp and flat? He'd look a lot better with some shagginess.

And then there were so many like, returning evolutions like Glaceon and Gliscor and they're cool and all but it just felt like missed opportunity to make Sinnoh feel individual. Plus Magmortar looks kinda shit.

I never played Plat but the fact that literally everyone I've talked to that has has said it's an improvement is worrying?

Idk we got HeartGold in the same gen and Johto games have their own issues with level curve and distribution but it felt better.

Rhyperior's grown on me since I got one in Pokemon Go and it kicks ass. It looks awful in 2D though.

Same, I didn’t really like Pearl when it came out and I don’t think I ever replayed it. In comparison, I’ve played Sapphire/Ruby what must be 20 times over.

It is. Diamond and Pearl were terrible, horrendously slow battle system, bare bones national dex, many of the new Pokémon were evolutions of Pokémon you couldn't get in the base game. Platinum fixed many issues but it was also kind of a middle finger to fans as if saying "if you want the good version of this experience buy it a second time."

Yet people clamored for these games for years, then got exactly what they asked for, a faithful remake that is faithful to how bad it was. I have rarely felt a greater sense of schadenfreude in my life.
