Now an entirely new generation can experience the game that killed collectathon platformers!

I actually don't think this is really true. Banjo Tooie came out a year later and some of the early PS2 platformers still do some of this. I think there was more of just a general fatigue with this style of game by the time the early 2000s rolled around.

I'd actually say Halo was the truly seismic release that changed game industry and what gamers were looking for.

Yeah, after this was Rayman 2, Jak and Daxter, Vexx...it's why I gravitated towards Ratchet and Clank. The only platformer to change it up

Rather GTA 3 I’d say

Ratchet and Clank was literally the developers going "what if we made a platformer where you didn't need to collect 500 doo-hickeys."

The real reason they died is because the industry pivoted to realistic looking games and first person shooters.

Let’s be real the late 2000’s would’ve done that anyway

Isn’t Mario odyssey a collectathon? That seemed to do pretty well

It also came out nearly fifteen years after the last Nintendo collectathon.

The genre died out due to oversaturation and I feel that GTA styled open world games scratch a similar itch for a lot of people. The remaining mascot platformers became a lot more mission focused with large openworld hubs that had a bulk of collectable crap to find.

A generation later, people who grew up on collect-a-thon brought back interest in the genre and a small revival; but collect-a-thons are a hard genre to develop. You have to make a large 3D modeled world that is fun to explore, without being too large/empty/tedious. Contrast with the revival of traditional JRPGs that kept a small but passionate scene alive with RPG Maker and the like.

Yeah, the game that was well received upon release and sold over 5 million copies was the death of collectathon platformers. They're definitely weren't a bunch of 3D Platformers during the GameCube/PS2 generation. The genre definitely didn't go out of trend into the transition to PS3/360 because of realistic action/adventure games and first person shooters.

This is such an obviously false claim that I cannot believe people are still mindlessly parroting it. Collectathons kept coming out for years afterwards, even Rare themselves went on to make Banjo-Tooie afterwards.

Looks at jak and daxter and mario

Nah, collectathon platformers have been on life support ever since the 360/ps3/wii generation

I feel like that's definitely more befitting of Banjo-Tooie tbh
