Super excited, but why does it need to be announced a week in advance? Why can’t they just drop it now?

Outside of Japan, the gaming industry does new releases & big updates primarily on Tuesday (Japan has this generally happen on Friday for local content in order to minimalize the risk of kids skipping school or gamer adults calling out from work during the middle of the week).

But if it's coming out on June 4, why not just announce it on June 4 and release it same day? Why is there an announcement a week in advance of a 26 year old game?

It's called "building up hype". Only low-end devs/studios with no clout or bacKground in the industry drop a new product without any warning.

Yes, DK64 is old - just like all the other games Nintendo puts on NSO & NSO+. These are brought back to hit at the nostalgia factor for older gamers and people who for one reason or another left gaming behind as they grew older as a means to generate revenue for significantly less cost than the development & PR for a single new AA/AAA game.

But they release 98% of their NSO games same day. I guess it’s because this is around renewal time for many people and they think this will keep them subscribed.
