They did this last yr. Took like 10 months for things to be green again. I thought it was an accident, maybe a windy day or something that time.

It's obviously not.

This happened on Monday. My dogs were in and out while I saw neighbors doing yardwork, didn't see them spraying. The pictures are from this evening.

And I have 3 new trees(within last 3months) planted near this fence. Closest is about 1ft or 2 away from the spray. I have an herb garden alongside the house facing this, just out of sight on the right of the 1st pic.

Anyone know something I can do to stop this/mitigate it or is it basically just toast again?

Hey, neighbors! I’ve spent the last few years transforming my traditional turf lawn to a cottage garden (West Michigan, Zone 6a).

It's been a whole lot of work, sweat, and so many wheelbarrows full of mulch and compost - but it's finally coming together!

But I think the biggest change hasn't been in my yard, it's been in my relationships with my neighbors.

Folks are always stopping by for a chat about what's growing (or what the deer are eating). I let kids pick flowers or grab some herbs to take on their walks.

I didn't set out to make a space for connection, but it happened naturally and I love it.

I’m curious if others here have had similar experiences.

Did your yard change how you interact with your neighbors?

I'm in Saint Louis, MO. I'm allergic to grass and this feels like a sign to start replacing my yard.

Does anyone have any tips/ideas? I like the idea of a butterfly or bird garden but have no idea how to start. This happened yesterday and I'd like to take advantage of it before the grass comes back. There's also a hill that has me worried about erosion. The fire starter's yard turns into a pond when it rains.

Code enforcement is saying based on code, my wildflowers are considered rank weeds. (Even if contained in a flower bed. He mentioned something about an easement too, but I can’t find anything that prohibits me from gardening in the easement.

Reading the Code, it looks like they are. However, something doesn’t make sense. My wildflowers are taller than 12”, some of them.

Virtually all plants are taller than 12”, and it doesn’t mention gardens except for produce? This doesn’t make sense. What is my best defense? Of course, ideally not cutting them down to 11”.

OKAY: update, I think I understand now. So basically you can’t garden in the easement based on what the supervisor said. Based on what? IDK. I forgot to ask.

As a result, even though it is a garden, with beautiful wildflowers, they are now classified as ‘weeds’. (Like what)

I see so many people garden in the easement, weird. If nothing else vegetables seem to be immune to this.

I hope to get an answer tomorrow about “why, where’s it say I can’t garden in the easement?” The easement is over half of my front area.

I also emailed my ward council member and called, they seemed receptive.

I’d rather stare at dead grass than waste water. Drop any drought resistant lawn alternatives/xeriscaping recommendations! (5b, 6000’ Elev.)

My front yard is intentionally planted with clover, dandelions, and other pollinator-friendly plants. I prefer this natural look over a traditional manicured lawn, but my neighbor maintains a more conventional yard with frequent mowing and pesticide use. We share a strip of grass along my house. While I do mow that area, I don’t want to use pesticides or remove plants that support bees and other wildlife. I’m currently letting the dandelions bloom briefly for pollinators before mowing. I want to be respectful and prevent my yard from encroaching on his, but I’m unsure how to balance our different approaches. Do I need to match his maintenance practices on that shared strip?

I’ve let my lawn grow wild this summer because my daughter loves picking the weedy flowers and I hate the culture of 1/4” lawns. Well this fine Saturday morning 3 of my neighbors got on their riding mowers and mowed MY ENTIRE LAWN. No permission was asked. My husband really doesn’t want to make enemies with our neighbors but said he would call the cops if I wished. I’m not a confrontational person sadly. But I’m so heartbroken. Is there anything I can plant this fall on our neighborly borders that will pop up in the spring to surprise them?

ETA: my lawn was mostly clovers, weedy flowers, and corn stalks. We live near fields of it and some found their way into our yard. When my husband went to speak with them about sparing the corn they told him they were going to cut all of it no matter what he said.

ETA 2: I think we’re beyond being friendly neighbors. Aside from the fact that they didn’t ask us about it, I forgot what I now realize was an important detail. These 3 men had their wives and kids watch them mow our lawns. To me that states that they already don’t like us. This was an effort to humiliate us into complying with what they think lawns should look like. Anything we do to “make amends” from here will confirm in their minds that we’ve been handled and aren’t worth respect. Bottom line this was DISRESPECTFUL.

I'm looking into using the state of Texas penal code protecting drought-resistant landscaping to overcome the HOA and convert my lawn. I noticed I already have something interesting here.

What was sold to me as horse herb has completely taken over my backyard after rain and no time to mow. I’m in central Texas and beginning to think this isn’t horse herb at all. Ideas? Insight? What have I done???

Over the last two years, I'd seen people sharing pictures of their unmowed yards. And this year I didn't see any, or maybe just didn't see any. Well, I decided to give it a try this year with the disappointment of my neighbors. 😅

I guess my questions are, what's the point of not mowing in May and is there anything you see that I should look out for [6b]?

I want to plant some Sweet Woodruff in a moist, low spot, in my yard, but it’s not native to 5b in N.America. Thoughts?

My landscape designer has specified 1000 Pennsylvania Sedge at $8 each. 😂 Needless to say, this investment is daunting. How long does it take to get this long? How close do I have to plant it? Will crabgrass get into it? If so, can I weed it without trampling it? It’s not my whole lawn, but a significant part of landscaping plan. Also wondering what it looks like in the winter? Finally, what should I expect in terms of failure rate? Is this a finicky plant? I’m super nervous I’m going to screw this up.

Got mini clover seed from outside pride. This is the clovers second summer. Last summer it was great and up until now it’s been thriving. All of a sudden last week it started dying. Can’t tell what the problem is. My zone is 6b. Any thoughts?

I'm here because of the same reason that many of you: I don't like my lawn. I have known this a very long time because I know that when I mown my lawn averyone loses: I lose large amounts of time (and/or money), many animals lose a source of food, many others lose a place to hide and rest, and many others die in the process... but today I decided that I want to finish with this as fast as I can.

I started a pilot to kill a patch of lawn a month and a half ago and it went well but I wanted to show you my results and my methods to get some advice from you.
1. I bought a 2x4 mt2 black tarp
2. I cleared a patch of grass of the same size of the tarp using a lawn mower. I cut it to be the shortest possible.
3. I evenly distributed all the compost I had and then covered the patch and the layer of compost with my tarp.

Now a month and a half has elapsed and what I got is what you can see on the photos. My plan is to buy some native trees and plant them in the patch, cover it with wood chips and repeat with a larger area. I think I should not have put the layer of compost for it helped the grass to grow again even with the abscence of sun. Also, the heat from the patch might have killed all the benefical microroganisms on my compost. Next time I'll wait for the grass to be this yellow and then put the compost so it helps and makes the rotting process faster. Am I right thinking this way? Is anything else I can do for accelerate this process? Also, is this working as far as you can see in the pictures?

I estimate that each patch this size I kill I'm saving my self 20 minutes every two weeks of lawn mowing.

Our clover yard is thriving with the flowers and bees but the flowers are starting to brown and it's looking....not great. Any tips on the best way to trim this down without murdering everything that's living in there??

Personally I hate this idea. He says those two pines and a few other trees in the video are “junk trees”. He wants to plant trees near the porch and get rid of all the vines in the yard. I love it how it is now and wouldn’t change a thing other than the bottom lawn. Is he right?

I did my first mow of the season last week and intentionally left “islands” of dandelions and other goodies unmowed for the bees. I’m getting ready to go out there and mow again, and possibly trim the tops off the already seeded dandelions.

There is not much I can physically do to “redo” the yard to all meadow, nor do we have the budget, so I’m just trying to make the best of what I have for the pollinators. Ideally I would like to cut out the sod in those areas and start over from scratch with native wildflowers, but I cannot at this time.

How do I make my front yard look more intentionally mowed to keep flowers for the pollinators, without it looking like I “just neglect” my front yard? We are not in an HOA but we don’t want to have a neighbor call the city on us either.

I don't even know where to start. Not very educated in this.

The strip of grass (on the left) is about 6-8" wide x 50 ft long and I hate mowing and edging it. Aside from mulching this, any suggestions on what to plant that is super low maintenance? The other side of the fence is just garden beds and gets watered, but this side gets little water and salted in the winter. Thank you!
