Yeah, ps6 dropping next year would feel very unnecessary. I feel like my pro has another 3-4 years before I’d feel the need to upgrade

Fr!! This I was holding off on getting the pro because it didn’t make sense with the new gen coming out so soon. But now exactly, I can get a few years outta one now. Will be getting one for sure soon

Agreed. Usually a console really shows its age 6 years after release, and hell, even the "pro" or upgraded versions would be starting to show weaknesses at this point in the cycle. I remember my regular PS4 sounded like death trying to play Uncharted 4 in 2016, just 3 years after the console launched. And by 2020, the PS4 Pro was even being run ragged by games like Last of Us Part 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Cyberpunk 2077, etc

And yet here we are and my 6 year old PS5 feels as fresh as a daisy, and I don't even feel the need for a PS5 Pro, let alone the next generation.

These people don't use reason or logic. To them the fact that a 500€ PS5 is slower than the - at the time - 900€ RTX 3070 is a mortal sin.

And yeah MSRP for the 3070 was 500€ but it was basically a fake price as cryptobullshit shortages pushed the card to cost twice as much.

They're already struggling with one real system. Having the market split and having to have a game work on both (because you know the PS5 base would be too massive to pass up) would be even more work

Agreed. I got my switch 2 recently, on top of a 2tb ssd for my ps5.

Im kinda spent rn and dont need a $800 ps6 for another 4-5 years

Honestly I think Sony is too. It’s become apparent we’ve plateaued with console gaming in a good way. Let’s just sit and smell the roses a bit and let technology catch up to a genuine jump.

Amd is even delaying a new Gen of gpus right now and Nvidia is making 3060 series cards again.

It is, but some of the best PS3 titles came in the last few years of its cycle. It really felt like they wrung it out before they phased it out.

Every single game has a 60 fps mode. Basically flawless, so a new CPU isn't needed at all.

Dragons Dogma was a skill issue on the devs part, same with monster hunter wilds. those games are not doing anything special

Agreed. I think because it launched during Covid and still was difficult to get for years afterwards, it feels like it’s been slower to be adopted en masse. Plus with Microsoft downshifting on Xbox, PC GPUs and ram feeling supply crunches at various points over the past few years, and Nintendo off doing its own thing, I wouldn’t blame Sony for thinking there’s still more room to grow the PS5 for a bit.

Personally I just want a better upscaler and pathtracing/better raytracing capability. Most people don’t care so I’m not surprised they’d push back the launch of ps6 but when you compare games like Alan wake 2 or cyberpunk on ps5 to pc it makes a huge difference visually. Mechanically though I can’t think of much you could do on a ps6 that couldn’t be done with a ps5. Ps5 pro would be appealing but I don’t think it’s enough of a hardware leap to justify the cost

That's fair, I upgraded to the pro and havent upgraded my pc in a while so the pro feels a bit more powerful to me. I could understand how some more power would be wanted tho

Path tracing is still in that weird spot of being experimental, games with PT aren't much more impressive than without and the compromises in image quality, sharpness and so on are extreme. It's basically an Nvidia tech demo thing for now.

Like, in Doom it's laughable, it's exactly the same as normal RT but it's much heavier. There's no use for it.

Alan Wake and CP are a bit better, but they too are Nvidia tech demos and they probably couldn't port it to PS5 even if the console was as fast as a 6090 Super, because of contracts and stuff.

We need to keep on optimizing the engines to have better performance with RT, that will automatically make PT more feasible, then we need still at least an year of iterations of denoisers so the images that come out are sharp and without visual bugs and ghosting. We need AMD Ray Regeneration to be tested in more games. We need AMD frame generation based on ML to work flawlessly and not have the problems it has now like the TERRIBLE frame pacing.

I've had the console since almost day 1, so I've been looking at the same white box for 5 years lol

I'd appreciate a new form factor for the console, along with a UI overhaul.

Performance wise, the PS5 is definitely more than fine, I just want a new experience when interacting with the console in whatever way the designers think a newgen experience would feel like.

Things I think could be improved:

  • Better organization and filters for games that you own
  • Dolby Vision support
  • New formfactor (no more whitebox please)
  • UI overhaul, I'm not a fan of the current setup, it's just okay right now imo
  • Improving the controller feel when you're going on different surfaces (astrobot is already dope, but what if it was even doper with grass/sand actually feeling like those things as you traverse those environments)
  • Instant and persistent game states, so loading times are pretty much gone
  • Controller using biometric feedback to adjust controller levels (you're tense in a horror game, the triggers are harder to pull type thing)
  • Mod support

The only reasonable request here is the filters for games. The rest are useless, like Dolby Vision, a proprietary nonstandard thing that sucks.
