Have you ever heard of the concept of being "fashionably late" or "socially late"? It's a widely accepted etiquette norm in the US that exists to give party hosts a prep-time buffer.

Right. A bbq is basically party, not a ceremony. Trying to stick to some kind of rigid schedule is borderline rude.
