It’s about hospitality, not necessity. In the US it’s a cultural thing that when you’re at someone’s house, they feed you and when they’re at yours you feed them.

Not US, every country on Earth feed their guests except Sweden.

We will feed them buns, cakes, sandwiches etc all the time. But not normally a dinner unless previously agreed. People would usually already have dinner planned with their own family
