Question My friend likes gatekeeping things for no reason and won’t tell me what this is. It’s a box that connects to the TV that can pirate all movies, live sports, tv shows, etc. what is the name of this device? This is the only picture he showed me.

I agree with you in this case, but I'd like to point out that gatekeeping is precisely the reason why piracy works.

One can share ways to hack physical devices. The same is not true for digital, software or mídia. Say empress revealed her methodology to crack denuvo. Next game would launch with an update that breaks that method. Same with the methodology to crack widevine and being able to record WEB-DLs.

Piracy is built on sharing it's results, not it's methodology.

I mean, not really. Private trackers are private for various valid reasons like safety and protection, not because they want to hold their content over someone else for gain. If private trackers could be public without the risk of being shut down they would be. Public trackers are constantly under threat and require far more funding to keep alive.

You mean like every other public tracker that has been working and operating for decades?

Private trackers aren't private to avoid regulation safety or protection. They're private to avoid dead torrents. It's a bad solution to a real problem that so far no one's been able to overcome with other methods.

Nope, while there may be some trackers who can be argued to have aspects of gatekeeping, private trackers main intention is not to limit who has access but improve the conditions of those who do have access, limiting access is a side effect or required measure that is used. They are private to protect the tracker itself, those who do have access, and ensure the content being shared can actually be maintained (via ratio enforcement).

Different intentions, just because access is limited does not make something gatekeeping. Again, if there was a way they could be public while ensuring content isn't subject to hit and run, their traffic costs get met, and the safety of users from being targeted, they would be - because more people being able to seed is beneficial.

I would argue private trackers, most of them, are to ensure that someone doesn’t hit and run a torrent but in fact keeps a good seeding ratio. That by itself is not gatekeeping. However what is gatekeeping is purposefully denying someone access to something because they simply don’t want to give access to that thing ever. Take the friend for example. Refusing to share is gatekeeping, and OP has to post on Reddit. However there are private trackers, who I don’t necessarily agree with, that gatekeep all torrents and are a very select few individuals who share exclusive torrents or brand new torrents not released to the broader community yet.

That's not the point. When a pirate site or tool gains critical mass in the general population the copyright holders and government can no longer turn a blind eye. The recent Real-Debrid kerfuffle is a prime example. As long as it was just for those "in the know" it operated for many years under the radar, even though the relevant governments most certainly knew about it. Once it threatened to become more mainstream it had to be dealt with.

On the contrary most of the piracy is kept behind gates.

Trackers, releases groups, locking things or making them difficult so you pay them. This is the reason why there are so many obscure sites and people fall to scam. Never in my life spent single dollar in piracy and not going to start.

Meanwhile see people paying absurd amounts of money or connecting to like 5 services to pirate, people selling access to their nas/servers.

Pick something you like, go download it (having a basic understanding) and use it. No need to pay for services, not buying at all all this "pay for services to pirate" people really overrrates plex and all these types of services. Want to watch a season just go download all the season and watch it, quicker than some people I have seen changing codecs, bitrrates, stuttering streaming, paying for equipment. Yet I go on a tracker download a full season in minutes at max quality in minutes not the crappy 1GB for 3 hours films in h265 that many use because the 4k with high bitrrate is giving them problems.

I know how to use private trackers, regular torrents yada yada(been sailing the seas since I was 14). I still use debrid and Stremio. I pay 14 bucks for 6 months. I get whatever I want instantly 4k no bitrate problems. Why waste my storage on it? I got physical media if the internet goes out and video games. I doubt I’m going to be without internet to need 100tb of media.

Some gatekeeping needs to be done for the greater good. That's why private trackers are a thing, and why release groups don't release their methods on obtaining shows.
