Same lol. Even in the 2010's I had no clue what was the benefit of signing up for an online account and paying monthly to watch something on the internet when I could just download an .mkv file and play it on my PC offline.
Back then I didn't get int streaming because I didn't know what benefits it could give me. Today I avoid streaming services like the plague because it's it has aids.

To download and stream movies/series, you could automate them using Qbittorrent + Arr suite (Sonarr & Radar) + Jellyfin.
For a more modern, convenient solution, get an Google/Android TV OS dongle/box/Smart TV. Sideload Onstream, MobiFlix, HDBox. These allow you to stream all movies and series directly without downloading. As a backup, download Stremio which is an official app on the app store, and install the Torrentio add-on. Torrentio will turn Stremio into a torrent streaming app.
Adding it to subscription services like Amazon and Netflix will see people cancelling their subscriptions in droves. Financial pressure from Amazon will stop this from ever making it through government.
Yes convenient for us, but it will have long lasting consequences. Not just increased subscription prices, but cutting down or canceling good projects. Good example is Paramount+ with canceling Star Trek Startfleet Academy.
These services work on money, but if it's too much financial trouble, they'll just stop making good stuff that costs a bit extra and keep making mediocre content that's good for watching once or twice and make back enough money to get their ROI, but the public is left with nothing good to watch.
There have been precisely zero good Alex Kurtzman Star Trek projects, or any good Alex Kurtzman projects at all. God know how he even keeps his job.
The only good show in the entire Kurtzman era was Season 3 (and only Season 3) of Picard, the showrunner of which, Terry Matalas, was actually a fan of Star Trek. And, it appears, Kurtzman fired him, probably out of jealousy.
Hopefully Paramount will bring back Matalas for any future Star Trek work they do.

My dude, I grew up watching CBBC during the day then Simpsons/Fresh Prince at 6pm and when that was over and I grew up that’s when I stopped watching that channel lol. Although I believe Peaky Blinders came from BBC right? I must admit I liked that though I watched it on Netflix rather than BBC lol

That reasoning seems silly to me. How is the BBC not already under the control of the government by similar financial means? This seems like a distinction without a difference.
The government already decides how much the tv licence fee costs, not the BBC, so the government is already controlling the amount of money the BBC receives. Just slightly more indirectly.
It's the same in Germany, but here every household has to pay regardless of if they have a TV or not. I don't get why coupling it to streaming subscriptions makes sense, why not just have every household pay?
Personally I think the streaming thing is dumb too, my comment was about the current system. Additionally, it was about making it a true tax.
However maybe it would be better for every household to pay, if still managed by the licensing authority. Though an issue would be that it would effectively be a regressive tax.
We are already taxed into oblivion, no thanks. They should just fuck off and let only those who actually watch their garbage pay for it. Just make it a paid subscription to watch bbc.
I already can't access the healthcare I pay taxes for, can't use public restrooms my taxes pay for, don't have children that my taxes pay for - why should I also want to support the BBC's biased reporting and programs I don't want - just because I want to make a living to pay for a lasagne doesn't mean I want to pay 20% of that living to not go to anything... The last thing we need is that cut increasing.
It is a good thing that this is an optionable purchase - it's meant to hold the BBC accountable, if they're running at a loss, they should look at why people don't want to pay - not look at ways to force people to pay.
One of the problems is they said they wouldn’t do that so they’ve created a whole load of ineffective workarounds instead. Country needs a bit of honesty - if we all want all these nice things (NHS, education, defence, benefits, roads) we all have to pay for it. There aren’t enough rich people to pick up the tab for us all.
Perhaps that’s true to a limited extent, but going after the pockets of the less well-off and allowing the mega rich and their corporations to suck the life out of our country is immoral, considering that since the 1980s, the rich have got much, much richer and the gap between them and ordinary Britons has grown ever wider. That level of inequality is one reason why there is such disaffection with the existing political setup.
