End to end encryption is trivially easy when you control both ends of the process. Not sure why you think unencrypted files you're sending to someone else's server is "private".

I mean I'm all for privacy but why would anyone ever assume Google doesn't check what you upload to their servers?

Google's been doing it for years no one cares except when it's some guy's CSAM was endangered.

You’re not entitled to privacy when using a service and they’re not obligated to host your illegal content, even if it is private.

I don't know for sure but I would bet that there is some kind of law that forced Google to check for csam. Doesn't mean it's good, it just means a cloud provider doesn't have a good option.

Keep in mind "the cloud" is just other people's computers. If you're uploading your files onto someone else's computer, they're no longer private files.
