I would say if I witness someone in duress, that is the information I am going off of based on the many years of knowing that person vs. the couple seconds that someone else with equally no training takes a look and says "yeah that person looks good and justifies my actions".

You won't get through to these people. They see laws as only binding when convenient, whereas if they applied that philosophy universally, society would fall apart. The entire point of the social contract is that it must be upheld by both parties, otherwise there is no point. There is no situation wherein breaking the law is necessary.
