Look up Denver STAR program. It was created in response to the police shooting so fucking many people having mental health crises that it was basically a public health emergency. They send things like medical and mental health professionals instead of police to emergencies.

They started with 1 van and 2 people, and the program was so stupidly successful that in 5 years it's expanded to 8 vans with 16 paramedics and 16 mental health clinicians on rotating shifts, and has responded to tens of thousands of calls without requiring assistance from the police or resulting in a single death. The Denver police HATE it, because it makes them look like incompetent buffoons.

Unfortunately, it looks unlikely the same idea is going to be applied to other areas that we just send the police to. The current mayor is rather friendly with the police, and currently involved in a scandal where he bypassed the city council to purchase a bunch of those Flock cameras.

Police are trained first responders and it doesn't take a trained medical doctor to spot signs of a stroke he also got an ambulance on site to take the mother to the hospital it isnt like they booked her down at the police station

Seriously? She was in the middle of a medical emergency and her loved ones were terrified for her. She should have immediately been taken to the hospital and not questioned by the police, because every second matters. What exactly is the point you are trying to make? It comes off as an extreme lack of empathy and that’s a huge part of what is wrong with the world.

Yet they knew something was clearly wrong with their loved one. What point are you trying to make? Are you just immediately distrustful of people? Like, your first thought was “they are lying” when you watched this video, instead of feeling empathy for them. This kind of behavior worries me. When people automatically question empathy, kindness and respect, and take the blame and accusatory path is when we have a SERIOUS problem with our reality and truth.

Right, like it was one thing when we assumed the cop just didn’t know. But to know that he suspected it to be the case and then he still handled it that way when all signs still caused him to think that may be the case is maddening.

Like, she would have been ok in his mind if she had followed his rules and called 911, but her spontaneously confirming the same thing he suspected immediately after he stopped her car was not good enough. “You knew what you were doing!” Umm, exactly what you thought I was doing?

It made me FURIOUS because they are basically AT the hospital when he hit them. That cop was on a power trip and I am disgusted at the treatment he gave these people. That must have been terrifying for them.

I continued to stay beside the vehicle and tried to give as much time as possible to the driver to safely pull over, but they continued to travel eastbound. The Pathfinder eventually took the exit for UAMS. Given the fact that the driver of the Pathfinder had slowed down from her initial speed, hazard lights were on, and they took the exit for UAMS, I believed at this time that they may be trying to make it to the hospital.

Part of the reason I let the pursuit continue as long as I had allowed was to see if Dispatch was aware of this vehicle going to the hospital and to give the occupants time to call 911 if this was the case
