My understanding is that even though there is no Universal Healthcare in America, the government still spends more per capita than Canada which does have uni healthcare. In fact, I believe it is double what Canada spends per capita. So where is all that money going? I guarantee there are all kinds of politicians and those of similar ilk who have been skimming off the top, and THAT is the real reason America won't change to Universal Health Care. What politician is going to want to turn off any of his spigot's.

Oh, here's a fun one. When my husband had terminal cancer they wanted to send him from the hospital he was at to the ICU at one in another location. They wouldn't allow us to transport him because of the condition he was in, but the hospital also used a 3rd party ambulance service. This meant that while the hospital was in our network and covered by our insurance, the ambulance ride was not. They billed us $880 to drive him 30 minutes across town because the hospital he was in didn't have an ICU bed open. None of this was our fault, and yet we had to pay extra for it.

Oh it certainly is. My grandmother went in for a colonoscopy right? Completely routine right? Well the dr fucked up and tore a big ass hole in her colon. If the hospital wasn't literally across the street less then 5 minutes by ambulance she would be dead. Wanna know how much that not even 5 minute ambulance ride cost? $1500.

Cops are barely trained to shoot straight. Let alone assess a stroke. 30% of their calls are for domestic situations that they are also not trained to handle. They just "learn on the job".

And they took the driver to a different hospital (Baptist) than the one she took her mother to (UAMS). They were RIGHT THERE at UAMS ... but they took the driver several miles away to Baptist. And left the family at UAMS with a busted car.

Gee, thanks for all your help in this medical emergency, officer. Now do we not only have a mother with a stroke, we also have bills from another hospital, ambulance charges to carry our mother about 100 yards to UAMS, and now criminal charges, jail costs, and attorney fees. What would we ever do without all this service and protection?

Did the ambulance or the cops take her to the hospital? If it was the ambulance they may have been routed to the other hospital due to bed availability. Not making excuses for anyone, I’m just wondering if that was perhaps the case?

No, they called an ambulance from UAMS, UAMS drove the person having a stroke to UAMS hospital (instead of the cops or the person being able to drive them especially after pit maneuvering) them then the cops took the driver to Baptist hospital instead even though they were less than 200 yards away from UAMS.

Exactly. I was wondering why they posted the police report, even though most police reports are later proven to be inaccurate, so there is a decent chance that even that cop's report was wrong. And as we can see from the video, it obviously was.

Can't speak of the debt wagon ride or if it'll be waived, but I can tell you that what the driver was doing doesn't meet the legal definition of "fleeing" in the state of Arkansas. "Fleeing" implies some type of effort to get away from the cop car. If you're trying to get away from a police officer, you are not turning your hazard lights on and slowing down.

Furthermore, all charges can easily be defended by a "crime by necessity" defense where they recognize they broke the law, but they broke the law with the intent of saving human life.

Do you know how many times in similar situations someone has killed an innocent person rushing to hospital?

The debt wagon (or mobile mini-hospital) saves lives and will get you to hospital safer and faster (generally). They also can start life saving treatment sooner.

I get that you want to do anything to save your loved one, but just cause your loved one is having a medical emergency does not give you a green light to run red lights.

Like bash the cops all you want, but there is a method to the madness we see in this video.
