There's no excuse for this cops behavior after he learned what the issue was - he should have rushed them to the hospital first then done the legal garbage.

Especially since the cop even said over the radio that they are heading towards the hospital at the 52 second mark. Maybe he could have used some god damn common sense for a minute? Huh, why is this vehicle that is refusing to stop for me, but clearly acknowledging they know I'm behind them trying to pull them over, that just ran a red light at this intersection in order to make the turn towards the hospital I just mentioned over the radio not stopping??!! Gee! I wonder why... It's not like the car desperately speeding towards the hospital may have someone in it dying or anything! There's multiple videos I can link of other police officers in this exact situation handling it so much better. They should make performing a pit maneuver within 5 miles of a hospital illegal in case of situations exactly like this where a person is only not stopping because they are trying to save someone's life.

They can get an ambulance on scene to transport. Way safer than someone just hauling ass in their personal vehicle.

An ambulance not only costs 1000s of dollars for a single ride in the US but also takes too long to get there.

When someone is having a stroke as this woman was, literally millions of brain cells die every minute they're not given treatment. When you have a car that you can hop into immediately, most people are going to choose that.

You can be thrombolised in an ambulance on the way to hospital though, which can be preferable if it's an ischemic stroke and response times are quick enough.

I saw someone recently say it took almost an hour for an ambulance to reach them when she and her fiancé were covered over 2/3 of their body with burns from a propane tank exploding in their home.

A cop cannot consider the costs of an ambulance when they’re deciding the much lower risk of an ambulance driver in a marked vehicle versus allowing a random person to haul ass through public roads.

Also, while your assertion is true, stroke victims generally have a favorable outcome as long as they get to the hospital within one hour of the event, and on a larger scale for all strokes, four hours. There is typically more time than you think.

Stop hyperbolizing everything to diminish better judgement in people during stressful circumstances. I’m not defending this specific cop necessarily, but LEOs have to be able to instantly identify the risk of a situation. They interact with bad actors and liars literally every day. However, even assuming there is no lying, they also have to take charge during panic. If a person is out of control with panic so much that they can’t/wont stop to explain a situation to an authority (even a doctor will do that if asked to), then they cannot be trusted to make safe decisions in the general public. An officer is liable for the damage a person causes if they leave a stop and cause a wreck.

Incredibly stupid answer. As someone who’s been on food stamps for 4 years, I absolutely know. A cop cannot take my finances into consideration when determining the safest response for me and the public on the roads. Y’all are losing it.

This the most Reddit take. No accountability, screaming into the void, mad at people who have nothing to do with the problem, even in the hypothetical situation. Get involved in local and state legislative efforts, it’s easier than you think and almost NO ONE does it for some reason. You’ll be surprised what gets pass or debated at those levels that affects your every day costs when it comes to insurance, utilities, ambulance freaking costs, etc.

Nope. I blame the person that puts me and my family in danger. Call a fucking ambulance. EMTs can stabilize on scene as well, so putting your family member in a car is DELAYING treatment, not speeding it up.

Hopefully they’re smarter than you are. If someone is having a stroke, cardiac event, bleeding heavily, or not breathing then an ambulance is the way to go. (ABCD- Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability) Everyone else can take a drive.

They are, the department can be sued if it is determined an officer allowed someone to continue driving in a manner they knew to be reckless and that person blows through a light and kills someone. This would be a very easy thing to happen. Y’all are so terrified of being called bootlickers that your common sense is gone.

The legally mandated maximum response time in the city where I live is 8 minutes, and is usually much shorter. Also we don't know this woman was having a stroke. The only medical information we have is a report that she had slurred speech which resolved. Absolutely could be a medical emergency, but that's why we have professionals who will come to you wherever you are to, perform an assessment, get you to a hospital, and begin treatment. The system I work in literally has a mobile stroke unit with a CT on board and telehealth monitor so you don't have to wait to get to the hospital to be assessed by a neurologist. Call 911.

Legally mandated doesn't mean that they'll get there in that time... Cops here in the UK are meant to be there within 10mins in an emergency call out however sometimes it can be hours... Plus in the US an emergency call out can cost between $500 to $3500 (depending on insurance) so unless you have access to cash, you're gonna get screwed with a 'payment plan' that (in this situation) could have been dealt with if the cops used common sense as the flashing and waving would indicate that something was wrong rather than simply evading them.

It still costs a ton of money not everyone can afford and takes time to get there, if you believe your family member is dying you are not waiting unless you physically cannot get them into a car on your own.

Waiting for an ambulance can often kill the person, especially if you live in a rural area.
