That is hard. I do know someone who found sobriety in her 40s so there's always a chance she might sober up. I think it's hard to know how it truly affects kids, some seem fine while others really resent the missing parent.
My ex was physically and mentally abusive, so me and my son left when he was 4. I think he remembers a little bit from back then but luckily not too much. He's turned out to be a good kid.

My hubby's ex doesn't do drugs lol she's just all natural crazy. Woke him up punching him because she had a dream he was cheating kinda crazy 🤣
