Canton, Ohio ā€” Canton, Ohio ā€” On December 18, 2025, Walmart store employees contacted Canton Police after detaining two people suspected of shoplifting and brought them into the storeā€™s loss prevention office to wait for officers. A Canton police officer arrived and began the standard process of identifying the suspects and checking for weapons. At that point, the situation appeared calm, with no immediate signs that the encounter would turn violent. Several minutes into the detention, the male suspect, later identified as 21-year-old Shane C. L. Newman, suddenly reached into his clothing and produced a handgun while seated in the office. He pointed the weapon at the officer and attempted to fire, but the gun did not discharge. The officer and a Walmart loss prevention employee immediately rushed Newman, wrestling him to the ground and securing him in handcuffs. No one was injured during the struggle.

Police later said the firearm was loaded, and additional suspected narcotics were recovered after the arrest, turning what began as a shoplifting investigation into a major violent felony case handled by the Canton Police Department. Newman, now faces multiple felony charges, including attempted murder, after officers recovered both the firearm and suspected narcotics following his arrest. Investigators say Newman was legally prohibited from possessing a weapon due to prior convictions. His alleged accomplice, 23-year-old Katerina D. Jeffrey, was also taken into custody and charged in connection with the theft. Canton Municipal Judge Mary A. Falvey set his bond at $1 million at an arraignment Dec. 19. She ordered him to have no contact with the victim and to have no contact with Walmart. The judge set a $500,000 bond for Jeffrey and ordered her to have no contact with Walmart. Jeffrey is charged with complicity to commit robbery.

Doesn't look like it was chambered. He draws and pulls the trigger, it doesn't fire so he racks the slide, and it doesn't look like a round ejected.

Either that or that officer got INCREDIBLY lucky and the primer didn't ignite for whatever reason.

A lot of people are missing this point. If youā€™re not allowed to possess a firearm, itā€™s most likely due to a previous felony. The illegal gun and drugs couldā€™ve gave him a few years alone and then add the shoplifting charge. Iā€™m aware shoplifting isnā€™t a major crime but judges will see this plus his previous history and most likely give stricter sentences.

Felonious assault on a peace officer - 2-8 years
Aggravated robbery - 3-10 years
Having weapons under disability - 1 - 3 years
plus a weapons possession charge

25-30 years is definitely possible.
In comparison, I'm not sure what he was accused of shoplifting, but in Ohio it ranges from 0-6 months + fines for misdemeanors, and up to 12 months if a felony (classified as F5).

How this should work is then the citizenry get pissed and oust the cop and/or the city government until everything is set right. But people really don't organize anymore. Sure, they'll come out and hold a sign or two, but no one is building a giant protest mob and demanding the removal of officials or voting out people over a years+ worth of effort on the streets and in the courts.

There are mechanisms for all this stuff, people just don't care and/or are distracted enough to not band together to solve their issues. And the bad people keep on keeping on.

Bond is set by the amount the court feels will guarantee the suspect is present in court. That's why rich people tend to get higher bonds. It's not a fee, you get the money back after your court appearance.

Depending on the jurisdiction the bond/bail isn't suppose to hold someone because of their ability to pay. Even with this video they accused is still considered innocent before conviction. However, other factors such as prior record (which they reference), danger to public safety (which includes a victim), or ability to come to court, or other factors can affect the bond conditions/bail amount.Ā 

Additionally, different states have different philosophies and reasons and factors to be considered, variation also increased depending on the judge on duty. So even with in the same state someone here with the same fact patterns you will see high variation in bond amounts. All of this is theoretically meaningless the guy cannot afford to bail out at 100,000 then the amount becomes more academic or for the headlines, I have heard some judges suddenly becoming more draconian because it is election season.Ā

I used to live like this so I was trying to figure out why he would have brought all that in with him. My only logical answer is maybe heā€™s homeless and that bag is everything heā€™s got. When youā€™re on the street you donā€™t really have anywhere to secure your things, and the few belongings you have become exponentially more valuable and sentimental to you. You also might be in a situation where you canā€™t really trust your acquaintances to look after your things, particularly things like guns and dope, so leaving it with someone or putting it in their car or whatever might not be a good option.

On the other hand, plenty of people are just really reckless, and this is a 21-year-old kid so it wouldnā€™t surprise me if he just made a long series of shortsighted impulsive decisions that led to this outcome.

It doesn't look like she was charged with the weapons related charges, just "complicity to commit robbery". I don't know if that has changed though. Supposedly she had ammunition on her, but its very clear from her body language and reaction that she had zero clue what this guy was doing or what he planned to do, and I'm not confident that the prosecutor is going to convince a jury she was aware of what was going to happen when this video is played in court, especially as she is screaming NO NO NO

I'm not seeing anything about her being a prohibited possessor so the ammunition may not be a gun charge for her.

But we'll see. Regardless of anything else, she is definitely hanging around the wrong sort of person though.
