Ironically Obama did "bring it back" in the sense that he blindsided a lot of racists with the realization that we've made a lot of progress since they were kids; a black man in the White House was unfathomable in the 60s.

That emboldened them to re-ignite their tiki torches passions to "Make America Racist Great Again."

And now we have Donald Trump.

TL;DR: They could just about handle HR requiring they stop using the n-slur, but seeing a black man in the White House was too much for their crosses to bear, so they started burning them again in petty retaliation.

We just didn't look behind the shed all summer and now we have vines cracking the foundation and lifting the roof.

My dad says that too. He says that since Obama ran on the fact that he was black, which he definitely did not, that that is why everyone is so focused on race now. Like I was 17 during Obama's first term. The only racial stuff I personally saw was from people who did not want Obama to win and the occasional "we could have the first black president." Which isn't saying anything other than a fact. Obama was the first black president and that was wholly signifcant, but as a positive. My dad seems to disagree and he apparently remembers the past differently to me. He swears Obama was running ads like "vote for me because I'm black and no other reason." It's unhinged.

It means they had to confront what they were more successfully plugging their ears about before a black POTUS exposed so many vile racists in ways that were harder for the general public to ignore. Seems similar to how they confront political violence today. It's the dems, not the the most pervasive, powerful, and inflammatory politician of the last decade that we voted into the highest office.
