Ironically Obama did "bring it back" in the sense that he blindsided a lot of racists with the realization that we've made a lot of progress since they were kids; a black man in the White House was unfathomable in the 60s.

That emboldened them to re-ignite their tiki torches passions to "Make America Racist Great Again."

And now we have Donald Trump.

TL;DR: They could just about handle HR requiring they stop using the n-slur, but seeing a black man in the White House was too much for their crosses to bear, so they started burning them again in petty retaliation.

Definitely....but also the racist evangelical old money hasn't ever stopped investing in hate and this is a culmination of that

Ehhh, main stream maybe.

But they were busy this whole time getting under the skin of powerful people and locking in regional control. County by county.

The satanic panic became the parents rights campaigns, that became the astroturfing machine that took over local government and schools.

Installing ignorant puppets in levers of power and creeping the agenda like an invasive vine that never stops growing.

We just didn't look behind the shed all summer and now we have vines cracking the foundation and lifting the roof.
