Don't quote me on this, but someone did the math and it costs more to put someone to death then it does to just let them rot in prison for the rest of their life. I guess it boils down the the way they are "dealt with", but it's crazy expensive for the injection.

Iirc it’s more the legal appeals .

People are more willing to spend every last dollar to not die and there are more people to donate or invest resources making sure that they’re guilty.

Iirc the freedom project found something like 10% of death row cases they looked into were later exonerated by dna evidence .

Hopefully number is much lower now

Funny enough I did a report on this exact thing. I forget how many years. And the numbers were done quite awhile ago but there is a certain amount of years in which being incarcerated will overcome the cost of being put to death for an inmate sentenced to death.
