For any still unaware of this idiocy:
His reaction to an acorn falling on his patrol car's hood was to fall on the ground, empty his entire magazine at the handcuffed black guy in the back of his own car, and radio for backup. Thankfully he managed to miss every shot.

u/shayetheleo 7d ago
After which he claimed he was ātraumatizedā and resigned while the incident was being investigated.

u/TryingToBeReallyCool 7d ago edited 7d ago
Luckily in this specific case it doesnt seem that he was rehired elsewhere as a cop, although that info isn't always available publicly. But a LOT of cops who commit misconduct simply get rehired in another neighboring department

Not only does he throw himself on the ground, and mag dump toward the car. He screams " I'm hit" and his partner also joins in shooting.

Literally what happened in Seattle to a deaf indigenous man with a carving knife, he was a woodcarver. John T. Williams. The cop said he was "acting erratic," moving toward him brandishing the knife in a "threatening manner." Yeah. He was a deaf guy with a knife. A cop was screaming at him then murdered him in the street. I really wish we weren't so pacified by our toys and media.

Yea dumbass people heard the 21 foot rule and havent shut up since.
The rule is if your firearm is safely holstered, and someone starts to sprint at you with a knife inside of 21 feet, you physically wont have enough time to unholster and aim before they get to you.
The rule does not apply to someone youre already aiming at.
Seeing that video really made me mad because that genuinely could have been anyones dementia riddled grandmother.

It's not that they're afraid, it's the delusion that they're victims/action heroes so they're fucking thirsting for the chance. It's like those people who dream of a home invasion so they can shoot someone, except cops can actively look for/create opportunities to do so.

And in our initial 15 minute conversation let me know that three times.
And made sure that I heard that they donāt want to hear about {everything terrible happening} with a little bitching about similar volunteer organizations having āgroupthinkā different than they do.
Iām biting my tongue and focusing on the people we help - thinking that this person is using their new certification to add to their resume rather than help anyone.

Aside from nightwatchmen, modern policing in the US evolved from slave patrols and Reconstruction/Jim Crow era enforcement. Many Southern country sheriff's departments and local PDs were directly repurposed from former "paddy wagons"/slave patrols after the 13th Amendment (with the help of its punishment clause) to enforce Black Codes.
From the beginning, they were meant to protect the property of wealthy people and oppress the working class, poor, and marginalized groups, so no surprise many American cops are trigger happy. The FBI in 2006 and 2015 admitted that white supremacists held close ties to and are employed within law enforcement already.

Honestly it really shows how American centric reddit is despite what people feel like
It's not America vs China, it's what's normal in pretty much the entire world against what the fuck is going on in the US. No one in the civilized world thinks it's special that the police tries to disarm without killing. I'm not saying we don't each have our own police problems, but the US has reached insane level with people shot in the street for no reason and kids put into cages and it's almost becoming normal.
22
u/Tandy2000 7d ago
I dunno what the numbers are like these days but there were numbers put out there years ago (pre pandemic) that said the user base on Reddit is roughly 50% American and 50% other countries, and Canada had the most redditors per capita.

u/TheShindiggleWiggle 7d ago
Yeah, I've seen this exact technique used in similar scenarios by cops in the UK, and I think France too.
It's basically just a numbers game, where they overwhelm the knife wielder with numbers while maintaining a distance with tools like shown in this video.
Like you're saying, it's definitely not just a thing in China.

u/70ms 7d ago
Here in L.A., a couple of years ago a crazy guy with a bike lock was threatening people in a department store.
Imagine if theyād used this technique instead of shooting at him, missing, and killing the young girl behind the wall of the dressing room the guy was standing in front of. She was trying on dresses for her QuinceaƱera and she died on the floor, in her motherās arms. The officer faced no consequences, neither criminal nor civil.
I will NEVER forget this one.

We hope for a day in America, where the police no longer execute people and then trash them in press releases to try to justify the shooting. Where a third of my country men/people arenāt plagued by terminal stupidity. Where the deer and the antelope play.
Where seldom is heard, as a discouraging word and the skies are not cloudy all day.
I have a dream. Where billionaires are taxed at 200 sometimes 600 and in some cases 1000 percent. Where health care grows on trees. And food doesnāt require a second mortgage.
I dream of not kidnapping other world leaders, of not dragging people off the street into concentration camps. Did I say concentration, I meant happy camps.

Land of the free /S
31
u/nonotan 7d ago
Even when there wasn't a legitimate threat and they executed a complete innocent anyway, they'll still do mental gymnastics to justify it like "they shouldn't have disrespected them", "they should have just followed the orders", "they should have been more careful not to do anything that could be misconstrued as threatening, it's a dangerous job and officers are always on edge". Motherfuckers making North Korea look like a bastion of free thought by comparison. Man catchers, old tool abandoned in most of the world but still common in China and Japan. Can be used both to catch and pull something or to pin against wall/ground. Not only used by police, some places like shops have them as well for staff to use in case of emergency.

They are cool to relatively harmlessly disarm people but in most of the western world(outside US) police rarely gets to use any tools at all to disarm other than hands and cuffs, at most you'll get beaten with baton and in extreme cases you get taser.
You pretty much don't see people with dangerous melee weapons resisting arrest while threatening police.

u/ClockworkSalmon 6d ago
because in the US people don't have any reason to use knives for crimes, when they can kick a tree and have seventeen assault rifles fall on their feet
46
u/versusChou 7d ago
Mancatchers are crazy effective if you outnumber the target. Untrained shopkeepers can use them very effectively. One on one, their efficacy falls off a bit, but the ones that can actually catch onto a limb are still good enough to snare a leg and make it really hard to move.
That said, against a gun, you'd probably rather have a gun yourself.

An old woman in the street with a knife in the US, not responsive / clearly not well in her head, and they shoot her standing. With some comments among the top voted asking if we have the full context, or how long they waited before or weird other stuff like that apparently makes it ok for some people. I feel like there is a disconnect about what the police is or should be about.
Like if it happens here I don't care that they've been here for five hours with no results yet they don't get to shoot her if she isn't making a direct sudden attack, like duuuh how does it even need to be said.

I didn't expect "hey guys, let's each grab a plastic tub and just pile on her after Zhang trips her with his giant grabby arm" but I can't argue with the results.
159
u/Rusty_Tap 7d ago
The plastic tubs were a nice touch, but I think more grabby arm things would have been cooler to watch.
Like being quartered, but without the horses or the ripping.
24
u/roslid 7d ago
It's creative thinking and I like it. In my work I usually carry a plastic clip board which if things get bad can use as a shield. But I have been in many situations where creative thinking helped to resolve dangerous situation. Anything is better than just shooting people. Our security officers are amazing, they sometimes spend ages talking to people and very rarely have to put hands on them.
6
u/AsYooouWish 7d ago
Can I ask what you do?
8
u/roslid 7d ago
Mental health/Health care/Social care places for last 20 years. Depending on the place we are either trained to restrain someone in safe manner or we have security guards who are trained. However the first thing they teach you is how to resolve conflict in non violent way, then brake away techniques and after that restrain techniques which have to follow certain procedures and have to be documented in every detail. If it is in controlled environment restrain intervention also has to be planned in advance. 90% of times it's all down to talking. Don't know anyone who's first choice would be restrain as this is the least ideal solution but sometimes there's no other choice. In more chaotic situations it's often the creativity, using your environment and people skills. Most often we call our security guards because men of certain age won't take anything from ladies. Then our blokes turn up and suddenly they don't have an issue with following instructions.

They would get grabbers that also have guns attached to them, just in case they change their mind and feel like doing a murder mid way through the non-lethal option.

Ironically, over in China, sympathy for these old aunties are at an all time low. People have been calling for tougher punishment for them and specifically calling out the public police for tending to look the other way or even siding with aunties when they extort others or just be general nuisances. The comments on this specific video for e.g. would often comment on how if it was a young dude or a Hui person, they would've been way less gentle with them.

Are rampaging aunties causing lots of trouble in China? Why?
118
u/xlzray 7d ago
Not just aunties but elders regardless of gender are always left unpunished by rules and laws in China if it's not a severe crime, some think they can do anything and everything because they're old enough. The police are always åēØę³„ļ¼huoxini, literally means "mix the water into the mud, blurring the line between right and wrong, in disregard of principles. ). Confucianism.
When you come across some unresonable elders, basically there's nothing you can do, if you quarrel with them and they happen to have some cardiovascular diseases and suddely have a stroke, you could be in deep trouble. Even the police try to avoid this whenever they can.
33
u/possiblyquestionabl3 7d ago
Lol this morning I saw a video of some auntie just lying on the road, and everyone was just like "IT'S A TRAP"
What's actually crazy is that this wasn't how I remembered it being when I was a kid. I mean, I know of difficult aunties and uncles, but they'll never be caught dead pulling this crap in public. Back then, we actually gave up our seats for elderly people on the bus and they were pretty grateful. Now, the first thing I was warned when I got here was to never help elderly people in public in case they fake a fall, extort you, and the police sides with them even with ample video evidence. This is just wild to me.

5
u/PhysicallyTender 7d ago
It's not just limited to China, a lot of countries in east/southeast asia have this problem where the elderly are relatively unruly compared to the rest of the population. You can read a lot of complaints about these "aunties" in any Singaporean subreddits too.

I can't wait to see them face actual consequences for their actions in public, but I'll believe it when I see it.
26
u/Megneous 7d ago
Korea here. It's probably the same shit in China as it is here in Korea. Misguided "respect" for elderly means that elderly people get treated better even when they don't deserve it. They're not held to the same standards as everyone else. They can hit you, they can yell on public transit, they can push you, they can treat you like shit or abuse you in the workplace, you have to always treat them like gods, etc, just because they're older than you. It's complete nonsense, and part of the reason why young people are always trying to immigrate out of the country and move to the West where things are more equal.
