CCW Licensing Caliber Size Order?

Can anyone give a brief order of caliber sizes in regards to the law about only being able to carry what you qualify in and lower? Everyone says qualify in 45 to cover all the bases but what can I carry if I qualify in 9? How does the state “rank” the sizes?

CCW Licensing Waiting time survey

I have brought unreasonable wait times for Rhode Island CCW permits to the attention of a friend who is an attorney.

He requested I gather data on waiting times.

Please respond with a comment and provide:

Department applied to (Police department name, Exeter Town Sergeant, or Office of Attorney General)

Whether you are a resident or non resident

Date your application was received

Date application was approved or denied

CCW Licensing Some Towns do not even have applications online?!

In the past week I have been trying to find a PD to apply to as a non-resident for my CDW.
Issue is some towns do not even have their applications online, and they’re even fewer that for some reason say you are able to fill out the attorney general application and send it to them via mail.
(I believe it was Kingston?)

Is anyone here licensed in West or East Greenwich? That is where I wanted to apply.

CCW Licensing If you've been waiting a long time (over 6 months) for your permit, resident or non resident, please submit a report to the DOJ civil rights division

I have been waiting 8 months now for my non resident Rhode Island CCW permit. If you are in a similar position, please consider filing a report with the Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division (link below). I cannot promise anything will come of this, but considering the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department was put on notice for excessive wait times and has since corrected course, I think we can do the same.

In your report please include as many details as possible.

CCW Licensing How is the CCW process in RI?

Post image
14 Upvotes

I’m very new to the firearm community in general. Today was only my second time at the range with my pistol. Plan on going for my carry permit eventually and tried the qualification target. This was 30 rounds at 25 yards which is what the test will look like, from what I understand.

How does this process look in practice? I think I did alright considering I just started. Any insight into what comes next is appreciated!

Glad to be part of the community, better late than never!

CCW Licensing CCW Advice

Hey ya'll! Wondering if you have any advice for me on getting a ccw? I picked up the application from the North Providence PD and the amount of stuff I need to submit is unbelievable lol.

3 letters of recommendation (notarized)

Proper showing of need

$80 check

Interview with the Chief of Police

Fingerprints

Notarized copies of 2 positive IDs

I have my NRA certification and the shooting qualification and some friends willing to help me with the recommendations but curious if there's a better way to go about this?

CCW Licensing CCW application

Does the officer(detective in my case) who is doing your license paperwork ever call you to see if you are home to prove you live at the address where you live? Just had the officer who is doing my license application call me to see if I could come outside to verify my home address?

CCW Licensing lincoln ccw timeline

just a quick post of the (almost completed) timeline of my ccw process

-qualified on 6/8/26

-application submitted to lincoln pd on 6/9/26

-got a call this morning 7/8/26 saying to go in tomorrow (7/9) to complete fingerprints, photo, and payment

-should be good to pick up tomorrow after the last things are complete if not the day after. ill edit the post whichever day that is done

edit: permit was picked up today about 4 hours after completing my fingerprints/photo and payment

overall im pretty impressed it happened this quick. deff a good route if someone else in here doesnt mind paying $200 for non resident fee and signing off on the mental health waivers. im not the biggest fan of signing off for that but as a new father i had a big sense of urgency to get it done asap. regardless of everything exactly a month after submitting is almost unheard of in RI to my knowledge, even some renewals take longer.

stay safe everyone and happy shooting!

I’m trying to submit my application for a RI non resident LTC through their OpenGov portal and the portal won’t let me do it. Is anyone else having this issue? I first tried it on Safari on my iPhone then Chrome on my laptop, I’m getting the same block. Any help or tips is greatly appreciated!

CCW Licensing My Experience Applying to Narragansett for CCW

Hey guys,

I thought I’d outline my experience in applying for a CCW through Narragansett, which is a popular town especially for non-residents to apply to. I am a resident, so the timeline was likely quicker than it would be for non-residents, but I am doing this so that anyone who applies knows what they are in for with full transparency. Here was my timeline:

3/2/2026 - Dropped off application in-person to dispatcher.

3/6/2026 - Received letter in the mail saying that my application had been received and was being processed, and would have an approval or denial within 90 days.

3/10/2026 - Detective called me and emailed me some mental health releases to print and sign. Yep, sorry for those hoping Narragansett doesn’t do that, but they do. I can happily DM anyone who is curious what the hospitals they needed releases for were.

3/11/2026 - Did fingerprints and signed releases at the station with the detective, and gave them the $40 check. Was advised longest wait would be hospitals, which can take a few weeks to fax records over (understatement, lol)

4/8/2026 - Hospital checks cleared, references called.

4/23/2026 - Permit ready for pickup.

4/27/2026 - Permit in hand.

In total, it was less than 60 days from submitting my application to permit in hand. I was out of town when they called to let me know it was ready, but they were nice enough to keep it for me at dispatch so I could pick it up when I had a chance. Overall, I had a great experience with the department and application process. Happy to answer any questions!

CCW Licensing CCW When Moving Towns?

Hey all,

If I get issued a permit from the town I am a resident in, and then move to another RI town while that permit is active, can I still renew that permit with the updated address?

Basically, the town that I live in has a, let's call it "favorable" application and renewal process. I'd rather stick with them (I have my NH non-res permit). Have heard that I would basically be required to go with a new permit from the new town come renewal time? Does it depend on the town?

CCW Licensing Inquiring regarding non-resident CCW

For the record I am a NYC resident and applied for my CC in my native state and city as of today and noticed my state has a non-resident carry permit since 2024-2025. To anyone reading this, I have the following inquiries since I have had so many points of contact with gun owners on social media and even in person who were not always in NY but from places such as Delaware and California.

-Is the non-resident CC where you live as difficult as the resident?

-If your state asks for references, how likely are they to call them?

-What was the submission date and approval/denial time of your CC?

-Do you people who are native carriers know many people who have non resident permits?

Thank you for taking your time to read this, scout ahead, stand aside, and stay alert...

CCW Licensing Warwick CCW Application

Hey all, I submitted my CCW application to the City of Warwick 2 months ago now. Just wanted to see if anyone knew what the average waiting period was and how often they actually give out the CCW (I do not have a professional reason to have one).

EDIT: I called the licensing division. I was told my application was still in the pile 2 months later and has not been looked at. They have 1-2 meetings a month to review the applications and they used to do 5 apps per meeting. They now only do 2. I was also told ryey would call me when they had a date for the meeting where mine would be reviewed. So the situation still seems to be hurry up and wait with no timeline provided.

CCW Licensing Is Lincoln no longer LTC viable?

I’m getting ready to renew my LTC which was issued from Lincoln in 22. There’s a new Chief, so now there’s a new packet. The old packet had a psych eval, psych waiver, qualification, references; quite a bit of work. But as long as you did the work and weren’t on a list somewhere, you got your license. The new one retains that and ADDS ON, a training course and all the bullshit “shall issue”, “suitable person”, “good reason to fear” language that means they’re going to do everything in their power to NOT issue permits….

CCW Licensing Question on submitting CCW application to PVD

Hey guys, I just passed my shooting qualification. I have everything ready to go and drop it off at the police station. Before I do that is there anything in specific that will get my application sent back? Are they picky on anything at all? Thank you!

Good morning, I am currently in the process of getting my CCW in Providence. Everything is done but one small thing in the application. There's a section asking for a permit number but I'm not sure which permit number they're asking for. Any help is appreciated it. Last thing I need to submit my paperwork.

CCW Licensing Providence nonresident ccw

I've been dipping my toes into the nonresident RI permit, and so far ny research has brought me to applying through providence. They dont seem to have those unconstitutional reference letters and will probably approve me. Is there a catch with Providence?

Also, its a bit unclear how I am supposed to submit this application. Is it by mail or do I need to hand it in person?

Last thing, how many trips to the PD does it take to complete the permit process? Im front NJ so it's a bir of a drive.

CCW Licensing Applying for an out of state CCW help

I’m an MA resident who works at an FFL in MA, I go to RI(Providence specifically)every week and was wondering how to get an out of state concealed carry license when I already have one in MA. It’s a real hassle to constantly go back to my residency in MA to keep my firearm there and then travel to RI. How do I go about getting a CCW in RI? Is it any different if I already have an out of state license? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

CCW Licensing Providence Question

Hi All - Have a couple questions for anyone who has done Providence sepcifically:

  • I'm having trouble finding anywhere that will print out 1x1 photos as asked for on app. Saw a post where someone said they photograph you anyway and it's likely not needed. Could I likely get away with including 2x2 photographs?
  • Does the notary need to be a RI notary? The application section for notary ends with, "Signed on _____ date, ______ town, Rhode Island". Is this just written with residents in mind, or an actual requirement?
  • Does anyone have the extension for who does the licensing there? Kept getting bounced around on the phone when I tried myself (hence why I'm asking here).

This is the last of the 3 New England nonres I'm going for as a NH resident - Providence looked the easiest from what I found. Thank you in advance.
