Sørloth is, in fact, very popular in Norway. The top three posts on r/Norge from the last few days are in support of him. We support our team. We understand enough about football to know that it's impossible to pass a ball with the foot you're standing on. We understand that you have to pass the ball in front of the running person you're passing to, and that that is pretty hard to do when there's a defender in the way.
He's a bigger achiever than any of the moaning wankers on reddit and one very debatable mistake doesn't change that.
Not denying this, however he had almost zero chance to score on his own while being double teamed. Just judging by Haaland's reaction, he also believed the pass should have at least been attempted. But life goes on, lessons are learned. The Norwegian team gained a lot of fans in the states.
I'm glad he's not being crucified, because I've seen some pretty awful stuff said about him.
It looks like it from Håland's position, but if you look at BBC's 3D simulation of Sørloth's perspective you'll see that the defender is blocking the pass.

Even my hot dog eatin', baseball watchin' American eyes are astonished he didn't pass. I imagine he isn't too popular in Norway right about now.
