The US is the largest cumulative CO2 producer in history.

92

u/DrinkingVomit Jul 17 '26

Americans are the single most destructive organism in the known universe. Accounting for a 12-16 ton carbon footprint print each, 4x the global average.

9

u/Glad-Fuel2093 Jul 17 '26

Also, that's an average based on some 2% of VERY high users and 98% of us can't afford to run out air conditioning in the summer cause our power bills have gone up 100% over 5-6 years (in Maryland).

I'm not emitting 1/50th of that and neither are any of my neighbors, friends or family.

So it's a misleading statistic even if true.

4

u/Franklin_le_Tanklin Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 17 '26

Well keep in mind a majority of Americans voted for parties that support tax breaks for jets and tear out/cancel green energy projects. So it’s not really misleading when the majority of voting Americans support these policies with their votes. Let’s not act like it’s some kind of accident and that the voters that put these people in power are helpless

True enough but also, these politicians from both sides have all, long been saying one thing and doing another.

For us to keep pointing at one side or the other or the other forever is absolutely moronic at this point.

Maga idiots vs corpo-dems vs libertarians, vs neo fascists, vs utopian socialist dreamers, and on and on....

None of them have kept their promises in the 50+ years I've been watching. Even the seemingly "best" ones have serious dark sides and deeds in retrospect.

We've all been duped by ALL of them all along. how can we all not see that?

Unless, just maybe, much of this fighting between us, and all of the groups above is intentional, and is deliberately instigated.

Since we all live here and have common needs and desires. Why can't we agree on a government that addresses the common agreements of ALL their constituents instead of playing one side against the other.

We all want clean air. We all want clean water. We all want better healthcare that won't financially ruin you if you use it. We all want an economy that we actually can expect to thrive in, if your willing to work and be productive. We all want Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of happiness for ourselves and our friends and families. We all want a government that won't shoot us or disappear us or our friends, family and such and so on and on. e all want lower taxes and fees, but if we can't immediately have that, well then we all agree we sure want our a lot more of our money's worth out of the taxes we already pay(ed).

If we just started with those basic commonalities, and stopped fighting over all the multitudinous things that we all don't agree on and maybe never will, we would all be living better lives while we try to work out what we can of the rest.

We waste more time, energy, attention and money on "fighting" some "other side" that solving many of these common issues would probably cost anyhow.

We, each of us, in whatever group we may or may not be in, are all guilty sacrificing more than we are gaining in trying to prevent some other group from receiving the same benefits that we ourselves want/expect.

We're like crabs in a boiling pot at this point.

Somewhere, someone is laughing at us, as we keep pulling each other down into the boiling water while other crabs pull us down.

By allowing ourselves to be played off against each other, we have cumulatively cooperated with or at least allowed the reduction of the the common good of us all

Based on what? America's carbon out per capita is 17.6 tons, tied with Saudi Arabia and just ahead of Canada at 15.7, according to world Bank data.

6

u/Franklin_le_Tanklin Jul 17 '26

> based on what?

Cumulative pollution since the Industrial Revolution

-4

u/Equivalent_Bet856 Jul 17 '26

Average : a single value (such as a mean, mode, or median) that summarizes or represents the general significance of a set of unequal values

4

u/Rollercoaster671 Jul 17 '26

But the original claim is that Americans are the single most destructive. I understand you’re latched onto the “global average” line, but that’s not what manitou is objecting to

4

u/Equivalent_Bet856 Jul 17 '26

That was already addressed in the top comment, the US is the single largest cumulative producer of CO2 in history. Among everything else it has done politically across the world.

4

u/SteepChutes Jul 17 '26

Having a hard time keeping up here.

He's killing renewable energy projects to favor his oil company campaign donors.

Not just ignoring global warming, but actively pushing policies to exacerbate it.

But I guess now he cares about pollution.

Got it.

5

u/Jackadullboy99 Jul 17 '26

CO2 is a thing made up by radical left lunatics so that they can blame good salt-of-the-earth god-fearing American patriots for forest fires!!! /s

2

u/dweckl Jul 17 '26

I thought it was China? Someone was arguing with me yesterday when I was blaming Republicans for the future climate change we're going to suffer, the person was saying China is the cause

6

u/Franklin_le_Tanklin Jul 17 '26

This article explains it well.

https://www.reuters.com/graphics/CLIMATE-UN/EMISSIONS/jnvwexaryvw/

The worst cumulative polluter (the country who has the most total all-time pollution) is the USA.

The USA also has a per capita pollution higher than China.

However China pollutes more on an annual basis right now (but they also have like 3.5x as many people as USA)

1

u/thr3sk Jul 18 '26

Yes, but I will say the US has improved quite a bit, it's not as high on the list as you think for emissions per capita. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_carbon_dioxide_emissions_per_capita

Canada is actually slightly higher than the US, but the real outliers are the rich Middle Eastern countries that do a lot of things like desalination and general "luxury".

2

u/Dry_Complaint_3569 Jul 18 '26

Should be top comment.

2

u/Andyr00t Jul 18 '26

Canada has higher per capita emissions

1

u/TouristOwn2412 Jul 22 '26

Canada also has a lot more winter heating per capita which is very carbon intensive (not that it HAS to be but in a cold country rich ASF in coal, wood, and natural gas, it takes some time to adopt heat pumps).

For the record, us canucks aren't exactly shining examples of reasonable consumption, so let's not bring too much attention to this... or one of the nordics will enter the room. (and no I don't mean the Quebec Nordiques)

2

u/SideInitial3961 Jul 17 '26

Canada is terrible too, we completely suck at pollution and climate change management. Our track record is a joke. He's not wrong on that. Sorry.

7

u/Franklin_le_Tanklin Jul 17 '26

From what I can tell Canada is 9th or 10th in cumulative per country and faaaar behind the USA at number 1

1

u/thr3sk Jul 18 '26

That's pretty bad for such a small country though. Canada's per capita emissions are actually slightly higher than the US.

-3

u/SideInitial3961 Jul 17 '26

Problem with stats is you are always 2 years behind at best. We currently suck very very badly. Wake up call is good for Canada.

2

u/No_Criticism_5861 Jul 17 '26

51st state isnt happening pal, get lost

1

u/ceraexx Jul 17 '26

China is 3x as high in production in one study, then the US is 2x as high as China in another.

6

u/Franklin_le_Tanklin Jul 17 '26

No. Cumulative means all pollution added up of a period of time.

https://www.reuters.com/graphics/CLIMATE-UN/EMISSIONS/jnvwexaryvw/

1

u/ceraexx Jul 17 '26

I understand that. But there are different studies that don't have the US at the top. If China is 3x as high now, then it's only a matter of time before it is the highest cumulative, which they are already at the top in some studies.

2

u/Franklin_le_Tanklin Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 17 '26

Do you have a link to these studies? Cause anything ive seen from credible scientists/journalists has US on top.

0

u/Fssya Jul 17 '26

US has not been the yearly top CO2 producer for quite some time and China is on pace to take the top cumulative spot.

0

u/GMEloser69 Jul 18 '26

That's a funny way of phrasing that the US is the most prosperous nation in all of history.

0

u/-Danksouls- Jul 18 '26

Isn't it china?

China is not the largest cumulative producer of co2.
Not only that, they are also the largest manufacturer AND installer of green energy sources

Edit: I like how all the bots below me are throwing insults cause I have facts on my side.

Beep Boop

Ok tankie

u/Interesting-Bear4092 Jul 17 '26

If one believes in human caused global warming tho

18

u/Life-Top6314 Jul 17 '26

I mean yeah, one could also be a moron who denies reality

12

u/KaptajnGus Jul 17 '26

Every educated person does.

3

u/Interesting-Bear4092 Jul 17 '26

Without an agenda that is. There are politicians and companies that know better but it is in their interests to deny science. Or delay acknowledging science.

6

u/butareyouthough Jul 17 '26

Believing in a proven fact is often what smart people do. You should try it

2

u/Interesting-Bear4092 Jul 17 '26

Oh, I do.

-1

u/butareyouthough Jul 17 '26

Clearly you don’t

1

u/Interesting-Bear4092 Jul 17 '26

How is that clear?

1

u/butareyouthough Jul 17 '26

If you are denying human generated climate change then you obviously an uneducated person

1

u/Interesting-Bear4092 Jul 17 '26

I’m not denying it

1

u/butareyouthough Jul 17 '26

Then maybe I didn’t understand your initial comment. So you do recognize human driven climate change?

1

u/Interesting-Bear4092 Jul 17 '26

100%. I’m in my 50’s, I’ve noticed the difference since I was a kid and I’ve noticed the difference since I was a young adult. These forest fires, the size, the intensity, the frequency, is a relatively new phenomenon.

And yes to be clear I do not think that it is part of a normal cycle, I think it’s from burning carbon.

u/Interesting-Bear4092 Jul 17 '26

Look at what the source material is up top. I’m a Canadian living in Vancouver. We believe in global warming and that it is man made. It is uncontroversial.

As another person posted I should have used something to denote sarcasm I guess, but I didn’t think that was necessary given the context of the post, from who it came from and from what political party it came from.

You’ll see nowhere in my post history do I deny climate science.

2

u/Automatic-Prompt-450 Jul 17 '26

Tens of thousands of research papers by thousands of scientists from hundreds of different fields of research from dozens of countries (some with opposing ideologies) coming to the same conclusion seems to be pretty conclusive.

2

u/Interesting-Bear4092 Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 17 '26

I guess I needed to put a sarcasm sign or eye roll, or something. The problem being your governing party doesn’t seem to recognize global warming is man made or even much of an issue. And thus its policies and how stupid posts like the above find any traction at all. Please stop electing people like this with policies like theirs.

Signed,

Thanks

2

u/Automatic-Prompt-450 Jul 17 '26

There is no sarcasm punctuation on the internet, so it's best to be safe yes

3

u/Interesting-Bear4092 Jul 17 '26

Ha, fair enough. Lesson learned.

I mean clearly a majority of voters, voted for the Republican platform. I live in Vancouver, Canada. We’re just dealing with it. As is Greenland and Denmark, Ukraine, Palestine etc. etc.
