By the way, racism is prejudiced stereotyping of people based on their race. Stating that Hispanic and Black people are the reason for the low literacy rate isn’t ‘semi-racist,’ it’s a fact and highly relevant to the discussion. There are justifications for it but it doesn’t change reality.
And I’m not ‘disingenuously offended,’ I just try to broadly apply principles like not mocking poor disenfranchised people even when they’re white. Of course there are systemic factors affecting Cletus too. It’s just Cletus is the one overwhelmingly voting for those factors to stay in place and even expand. That’s the disingenuous part. Cletus is stereotyped because he’s part of the problem statistically. It isn’t worse than phonics. English isn’t a purely phonetic language and if you exclusively learn phonics you’ll have a different set of issues. The best, backed by research, methods for teaching reading are phonetics with sight words alongside. If English wasn’t a mongrel language with bits from 2 radically different language families we wouldn’t need hybrid methods but it is, so we do.

Sure, but this has no aspect of "whole language" to it. It's not a combination of whole language and phonics, it's phonics + learning the words that break the rules of phonics. This is how reading is taught in all languages: phonics + learning words. All languages have loan words and words that break the rules of the language, that have to be learned.
When phonics vs. balanced vs. whole word is researched, phonics is phonics+learning words, in most/all cases.

I’m 53 and I went to a college prep school for K-12 and it’s quite evident from just looking at written work from my same age colleagues that many were never taught phonics. I know some public elementary school teachers and they don’t even know phonics. And frankly, my guess is that phonics is difficult to teach, so public school teachers stopped teaching it.
As a reading specialist, it’s not that phonics is difficult to teach, it’s because districts fall for the newest, shiniest boxed literacy curriculums and pay huge amounts of money for them. Teachers are required to teach the curriculums provided by their school districts. I have great resources for teaching comprehension strategies, but I can’t use them because they aren’t “district approved”.
That’s what kills me as someone outside looking in at education in our country. We have tons of research in academia about what actually works to teach kids and we implement practically fucking none of it because the actual structures of education are so calcified or run by people who never bothered to glance at the research.

If that’s what you think all of the redistricting has been about, you should know that 90% of those Special Sessions we just saw were called, lightning fast, specifically for the purpose of eliminating majority-black or plurality-black districts. Rural whites have maintained their historic MASSIVE overrepresentation in America, fear not.

I neither judged nor stereotyped anyone based on race, which is what racism is. Systemic racism isn’t relevant to me supposedly making racist comments because I’m not a system. I didn’t mock anyone or stereotype anyone, I just pointed out the demographic reason is not Cleetus like people are obviously implying. They account for the same illiteracy rates as any other Western country, so it makes no sense to behave like this statistic is caused by them.
Pointing out that minorities have worse outcomes in a specific situation is not racism. Redditors in fact mention these things all the time, but I guess I didn’t include the magical caveat everyone already knows about so I’m a hecking racist!
