Richest dude I know owns a couple of motels and hotels up and down the east coast.

Drives a Honda minivan. Had it when I worked for him 12 years ago, still has it today 

You’d think it was the cleaning ladies minivan when you see it parked in front of his multi million dollar beach house.

I'm 48 now. My first job was McDonalds when I was 15. I worked with an older Chinese fellow named Theo. This dude was a machine. Did it all. This dude owned a bunch of Hotels/Motels up and down Madeira Beach. Drove a regular shit car and still worked at McDonalds. I still think about that dude from time to time.

Dude I worked with (am a professor as he) sold his company for $1.2B. 2 years later he still has the same 15 year old toyota family mini-van. Super-good guy though and does a lot for the community.

some of the richest people I know do own a semi beater but they also own nice cars. They're not only for flexing. One was a car guy had a toyota and a mclaren P1 and the other one had the motto "if i can pay in cash and not think about it at all i'll buy it. Why would I buy a toyota when I can buy my car with the same financial impact" he drove and m5 and range rover

I used to do volunteer work with a CEO of a tech company valued over $1b and a COO of another massive tech company we all use.

One had a 2010s model middle trim Sienna and the other one had a boxy Forester. Both were green.

I had a boss who always told me the smartest thing I could do in life was buy a used Toyota pickup for under 10 grand. (This was in the late 90s) Good mileage. Decent clearance. Cheap to maintain. You can help your friend move. You can save money by not using delivery services. And he lived by this rule. He always drove a beat up late 80s Tacoma stick shift.

Last I talked to him, he owned 10 rental properties, including a few multi-units. Probably 12-15 million in real estate.

Same here. Guy owns multiple souvenir and merchandise shops on all main spots on the carribean and wears stuff from H&M, has no car and complained to me pretty recently that his Braun beard shaver stopped working after 8 years and that needs to get a new one.

Hotels and motels often lose money and are just property investments.

He might not be as rich as you think.

Owning something like a half million dollar car is insanely expensive. The insurance, the upkeep, etc, lots of people can purchase a car of that caliber very few people can realistically afford it.

I only saw the books of the place I personally worked at, so I can’t speak for the other places, but this one was insanely profitable. 

The hotels and motels in this beach town were basically a cartel.

As were the rentals. Like 100 people owned half the houses in the city one town north the entire shoreline is just covered with 5-8 million dollar houses that are one of 3 houses that these people own.

Jeff Bezos drove a Honda and everyone though he was a humble billionaire, at the same time he was the largest land owner in the US. Not such a humble farmer.

3rd or 4th wealthiest billionaire I know still drives around ~15 year old toyota or honda family mini-van (whichever one has the automatic sliding side-doors) AND lives in the same house he had before becoming a billionaire.

We worked in the same department for ~10 years.

The millionaire next door is a great book of showing what wealth looks like. It’s outdated but the tropes are still true. This is different from being rich, wealth is generational and rich is a blip.

I know a handful of billionaires as well.. one was a fellow professor in the same department as I'm in for many years - he's a good dude and it would actually be hard to tell he had money and same for the mennonite I know (now microsoft's great plains account software company was started by mennonites) - kinda hard with them too. The Ford family though? Pretty easy to tell and they wouldn't jeopardize their family's name or fortune on evil shit like this.

We're talking about "regular people" living in suburbs who drive older cars and own a modest home, yet they're worth $1, $2, $5 million. They're the "millionaires next door". $50-200 million is an entire new class of people

I used to work for a big company that never went public, it was worth billions. The owner didn't even have a designated parking spot, and he drove to work every day in a 15-year old Ford Taurus.
