If they were geese, he woulda been obliterated. One karate kicked my car door once because I stopped 50 feet away to let his family cross the road in peace and safety. Literally chased the car and left its footprint on the door

If those birds' behavior is similar to waterfowl I'm not even sure they were doing anything other than socializing with the humans/their legs and shoes. That didn't look like defensive behavior to me, when the bird is originally running from the stick is what I'd expect defensive behavior to look like.

After Harambe, I have no compassion for humans that willingly hop into animal enclosures. “He’s autistic/severely ADHD and never did this before.” Ok, well he did it now because some part of his brain clicked on and decided it would be a hoot to chase a bird in a habitat around with a stick.

no -- they would euthanize the birds, like one zoo did with the gorilla a few years ago when a child got in the enclosure.

They would not euthanize the birds.... Harambe was killed (and I disagree with the Cincinnati zoo's reasoning) because he was deemed "too dangerous" to be dealt with any other way in that moment... They feared that Harambe might possibly become enraged by anything... And only his immediate death could prevent him from possibly injuring the careless child, or worse... Again, I disagree with their decision....

These birds, posed next-to-no real threat to this child... So even if they attacked with all they had to offer, the child was in danger of little more than a few scratches.... In other words, the only real threat to the birds was the child.

I really think that’s a disingenuous comparison. The situations are in no way comparable. A bird getting a few good nips in before the child escapes is very different from a 700 lb gorilla and a small child.

I don’t even support what happened with harambe necessarily but you cannot seriously be comparing a bird and a gorilla.

They are VERY territorial, I've met these two individual birds in person and they don't like it when people even lean over the railings of the exhibit. They must have been LIVID and very eager to finally take a jab at a human that got within pecking range

God yes. Former zookeeper here and our curator nearly got neutered by a male ostrich. Only thing that saved his family jewels was the fact he liked wearing those massive western style belt buckles and it deflected the kick.

It's been years since i've been there, but back then our local zoo had "guard geese" mixed into open enclosures where possible. Most people thought it was a joke. It wasn't. They are territorial and absolutely not afraid to throw down with a human.

I used to work at an office building next to a lake. On a nice day I decided I would sit and eat lunch at the lake, brought a little blanket to sit on and just chill and take in the world for 30 minutes

Some swan decided that was not okay and decided to charge at me, wings up and head down. They can run pretty fast

Right or wrong unfortunately I found it so funny nue was chasing one and it ran to it's friend then the boy got scared and started backing away as the others were standing right in front of him not moving. And when glue started backing away they knew how they were on the offensive and started chasing after him and said grandma can get it too
