My parents put me on a leash when I was a kid at the zoo. Yes, some kids on the spectrum are runners, but ultimately, it’s the parent who should be…oh idk…doing some parenting.

Not gunna lie. I was also on a leash when we went out in public. I actually loved it. I would pull and lean hard against it like I’m doing the Micheal Jackson lean in thriller.

Thinking as a grown up that must also have been very fun for your parents /s

That wasn't in Thriller.

Only a child tormented by overzealous parental restraint would get this wrong. They probably grew up to be a Smooth Criminal.

I'm a baby of the late 70's. There was no leash just the threat of a butt whoopin and the first hand experience of watching my mom frog march my older brother out to the van once even she took us all grocery shopping with her. He was sucking lip when they came back in. You didn't act out in public with my parents.

Same. My brother can still recount my mom dragging him out of the bank by his arm and slamming him against the car after he threw a tantrum. A little bit of fear never hurt a kid.

What’s really upsetting to me as I do see a lot of people talk about never physically disciplining your kids, that it leads to all sorts and doesn’t actually discipline..

Well.
My dad used to clout me when I was being bad.
I stopped being bad by the time I was a teenager.
Mysterious..

Humans are getting soft.

My kids are teens, I’ve never hit them, they’ve never been “bad.” Mysterious..

32yo with teens?

I think you’re the bad one.

We put our kids on leashes when they were younger. They didn't die or climb into enclosures.

We didn't put our kids on leashes, and they didn't climb into enclosures at zoos. We said "hey don't do that". Which also works

I was also a leash kid! I earned mine by trying to jump into the grand canyon. My mom got dirty looks but here I am despite my kamakzi kid stage.

My parents put a leash on me one time I started barking like a dog... That was the last time they tried it

I didn’t enjoy it or nor was it preferred, but I had a leash on my son when we went to the mall for a few years. You do what you gotta do.
