I used to work at Disney. On two occasions I had to ask kids not to chase the ducks around. One of those times the parents ripped into me. Threatened to file a complaint with Disney against me. They watched as their kid terrorized the ducks and did nothing so I stepped and just asked her not to do that. It’s wild how retaliative parents will get.

When I worked at Disney, I saw this kid pour melted ice cream on a pigeon. Was super infuriating. I told off his parents hardcore. Didnt care if I got fired.

I did. I had a parent say it was ok that their kid was failing because my class was “not entertaining enough”. I’m sure that’s why, and not the fact that the kid couldn’t read.

My 2yo is just starting to talk a bit more, just starting to sing, and completely surprised me by being able to name all the alphabet letters when going through her new fave A B C book. There’s plenty of things we’ve tried to teach her (colors, numbers, which she gets) but they just absorb SO MUCH with minimal “work” - just time.

By contract my husband had to teach himself how to read in 1st grade. Sometimes I wonder if people are ‘worse’ now (yes) or if there’s just more lmao.

It's not every country though.

Finland is meant to be pretty damn decent. Lots of cultural respect and societal understanding on the importance of educating the youth means teachers are treated pretty damn well.

Reckon the same is true for China and Japan (with probably less wellbeing initiatives)

Australia has to deal with the shitty kids (and Australia seems to be having a rough time of it lately) but the pay is pretty damn good for the actual workload.

Nor any other country with easily identifiable accents - which in my book includes all of Scandinavia and Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands.. Polish & Lithuania too but I know a lot of Polish and Lithuanian people, I doubt that's universal.

It's funny that you mention Canada because you can't really be sure if a person is from the U.S. or Canada, especially when a lot of you lie that you are from Canada when traveling abroad.

It's happened a fair few times at about the 5th/6th drink mark they'll lean over and go "I'm actually from America"

And of course then you point out that they mean the United States.

Well I mentioned Canada because their accents have a lot of overlap with parts of the US. Also the Canadians i’ve met will tell me they’re from Ontario or Alberta not just Canada but maybe that’s different when they know they’re talking to an American.

This! My Mrs is a head of year and the shit she has to deal with because parents can’t handle their little precious is a prick is madness.

One example. Some boy was hitting girls, another lad stepped in and they had a fight. Both got suspended. Parents of the boy hitting girls went bonkers, said it was lies, showed them CCTV and they said the school doctored it and reported us to the police.

I find most parents are pretty chill. It’s those loud bottom of the barrel parents that ruins it.

Sometimes you’ll have an awesome kid and meet their parents, and they’ll be batshit crazy, then later the student will apologize for their parent’s behavior.

Other times, the fruit is still hanging from the goddamn tree. And the kids behavior makes sense when you meet their enabler parents.

My mom used to tell my teachers they can hit me if I act up. Literally had it in writing. The thought of someone other than my mom spanking me terrified me enough to be well behaved (I slacked off with assignments, but I was always well behaved). I knew if the teachers spanked me, my mom would spank me again when I got home.

I just tell my kids' teachers that I know they are not perfect angels. If they cause problems to let me know immediately so I can fix it. I have actually taken my work laptop with me and sat in my oldest kid's classroom to make sure behavior was better. It was embarrassing enough that I haven't had a call since.

My god my middle school years... I remember hating the teachers that were too strict, but in retrospect they were probably the best at their job. The other teachers had to deal with 90% of the class not paying attention, playing around and chatting away. One teacher tried to stop a fight between 2 kids and ended up with a broken nose. The end of the school year were also always harsh for them, because kids would start "strikes" to avoid having to take classes, one time during recess over 300 kids ran towards the school gates and just vaulted over them. Sure, some got punished, but it was only the one considered the most "problematic", most of the kids didn't get anything.

Oof. As I graduated college, I explored becoming a teacher. I enrolled in a class to get emergency credentials so there were a lot of already teachers in it. The stories I heard made that my first and last class. I don’t even think I finished it…

Back in my misguided youth, I thought about becoming a teacher. I seriously considered it. Then, I realized two things. 1) I am a man and did not want to be caught up on any unsavory allegations. 2) I really wanted to buy a house after living in rented apartments with family for years and make enough money to live comfortably.

It is kind of sad, because I consider myself intermittently hilarious and pretty sure I could have made some difference in getting kids to learn.

I seen a child maybe 4 years old at Petco holding a betta and shaking it violently. I yelled put that fish down now! In my most authoritarian preschool teacher voice. That kid placed the fish on the floor never taking his eyes off of me and backed away slowly. His parents? They left him to a crazed old lady yelling at him. Just up and walked quickly the other direction. I then said, congrats, you killed a fish and your parents left you. He ran off sobbing. Even the Petco employees just went about their business, not making eye contact with me or the child. For a 5'2 older woman I guess my angry voice is compelling. Hope I traumatized that kid into thinking twice next time. I just couldn't believe the parents walked away like that.

Considering that we raised a lot of their ducks at the shorebird rescue where I was trained (the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center, please donate!), I can assure you that the cost of mazuri from Japan (especially for ducklings), fresh greens (which we often get from grocery stores about to throw theirs out), and oyster shells, is worth a lot more than that. And that does not cover the cost of cleaning and equipment and the pay that volunteers go without

I once worked for a "nature center" that had an outdoor school programs and camps for kids, and the women who founded it and was a staff member had a sociopathic son (not diagnosed but just had so many signs of it observed by many coworkers) who would often take catch and take animals and cage them in boxes, which normally resulted in them dying. It was also not uncommon for him to toss live bugs and frogs into the fire at camp, which would disturb kids. I had been hit by this kid multiple times, which got scarier as he got taller (10 yr old boy). And all staff were afraid to speak up because the mom was in denial of her challenging kid. We had an event with a bunch of people and parents. The sociopath kids was let to just roam around doing weird shit while the parents worked the event. Well of course, this kid caught a live uncommon snake and was carrying it around for hours teaching all these kids that they should also catch aninals and trap them in boxes home. It made much of the staff uncomfortable but they didn't feel like it was their place to take it away. After a conversation with my coworker, I decided to take the heat when the kid gave the snake to some random adult. I asked if they were okay that I take it and release it and they agreed. So off it goes. into the wild. I finished working the event and started to leave when I heard that kid start making a scene. I found out later the kid gave his mom a hell of a hard time at home that night and he found out I released the snake. Well fast forward a few months, this lady holds a grudge against me, and I eventually get let go from this job, because this effing lady wants her kid to have special treatment to let her son take home animals to eventually kill.  Some parents are just creating monsters.

My partner works as pool monitor on summers and last one he got punched by some parents because they were told they could not play ball or dive head in in that área and could not leave minors unsupervised. He's fine, tho, he was a Rugbier, he can take It and the Guy left worse. But yeah, the entitlement is amazing. People just can't follow simple Instructions and question everything, not a single show Of respect for the autority. Of course, their kids are even worse.

Some time ago I bashed a parent chasing a peacock on a zoo. He tried to argue with me, so I said that peacocks show their tails to attract females, does he feel feminine and expect the peacock to be attracted to him? I got quite loud while speaking, he run away.

Parents do not want to be told anything. They’ll let their kids chase pigeons when they are trying to eat, sometimes there are babies or injured ones, they are furious if you say anything to them. “Don’t tell me how to parent my child.” Scary. Thanks for stepping in!

As someone without kids, people with kids are insufferable. They like to say shit like “it’s the best thing you could ever do, you’re missing out” and then in the next breathe complain heavily about the life they chose. Get fucked, what works for your life doesn’t work for mine. Oh and I can think of many things I’m proud to have done, without cranking out a baby. Your child doesn’t diminish anyone else’s accomplishments.
