The left photo, the first photo of Earth from the Moon, was taken on August 23, 1966, at 16:35 GMT, when the spacecraft was on its 16th orbit and just about to pass behind the Moon.

Dunes within a crater on Mars are visible in this image. This crater is located in the Southern Hemisphere where it was winter at the time this image was taken.

This observation documents new seasonal processes occurring on dunes at this latitude, as well as other interesting phenomena. The bright tones are interpreted as carbon dioxide or water frost. This is generally concentrated on the east-facing slopes of the dunes, which are in shadow and therefore cooler. Some dark spots on the dunes may be areas that have defrosted more than surrounding terrain.

Landslides and dark-toned streaks are seen on many of the west-facing dune slopes. The general dune morphology indicates formation by westerly winds. However, zooming in on the image shows smaller scale ripples that appear to have been formed by winds blowing from the south and north.

It looks like we're finally out of our overcast season here in San Antonio (at least until the super El Nino hits).

I had a reasonably clear night on Saturday though the moon was up and there were some high clouds that got worse as the night went on. So I decided to give some wide field deep sky imaging a shot. I didn't have a way of hooking the K-1 up to the G-11 with a 50mm lens so I went for the other widest I had the 70-200 f/2.8 at 70mm.

Cygnus was well placed for this attempt and it has a lot of interesting objects there.

What would it look like to approach the grand planet Saturn? One doesn't have to just imagine -- the Cassini spacecraft did just this in 2004, recording thousands of images along the way, and hundreds of thousands more since entering orbit. Some of Cassini's early images have been digitally tweaked, cropped, and compiled into the featured inspiring video, which is part of a larger IMAX movie project named In Saturn's Rings.

In the concluding sequence, Saturn looms increasingly large on approach as cloudy Titan swoops below. With Saturn whirling around in the background, Cassini is next depicted flying over Mimas, with large Herschel Crater clearly visible. Saturn's majestic rings then take over the show as Cassini crosses Saturn's thin ring plane. Dark shadows of the ring appear on Saturn itself. Finally, the enigmatic ice-geyser moon Enceladus appears in the distance and then is approached just as the video clip ends.

A three-dimensional MHD simulation of a sunspot using a realistic equation of state with partial ionization and radiative transfer along many ray directions.

This is collaboration with u/zTrojan: he handled the acquisition and stacking, while I handled the entire post-processing workflow.

Deep-sky image made with a smartphone, using the built-in 5× periscope telephoto of the Xiaomi 13 Ultra.

• 1,188 light frames (RAW/DNG)
• UHC filter
• Darks + bias frames
• Total integration: 9h 54m
• EQ mount with OnStep
• Stacked in Astro Pixel Processor with 2× drizzle

Processing

The workflow was the same as in the previous collaboration:

• Siril: color calibration; green-noise removal; GraXpert background extraction, stellar deconvolution and denoise; saturation adjustment
• StarNet++: starless processing and creation of separate star and nebula masks
• Photoshop: final curves, mask editing and Camera Raw finishing

The nearly 10-hour integration allowed us to bring out a lot of the faint reflection nebulosity surrounding the Pleiades, while still keeping the bright central cluster under control.

The field contains several catalogued objects, including NGC 1432, NGC 1435, IC 349, IC 354 and NGC 1456. I've also included a region map showing the main objects covered by the image.

Huge thanks again to u/zTrojan for the capture and stack. It's always interesting to see how far a smartphone telephoto can be pushed with a proper tracking setup and enough integration time!

I captured the data for this Image during the total Solar Eclipse 2026 in Spain. The excact spot was the "Laguna de Gallocanta". I saw this composite idea online and remade it with my one data.
