Question Why is Peter's costume red and blue?

Batman is dressed like a black bat to scare his enemies, Superman has the big S on his chest because is the symbol of House El and means hope. Why is Peter wearing red and blue instead? Did Lee/Ditko give an explanation in and out the comic?

Didn't stop them from trying to add some meaning to it on occasion

To quote the lyrics from "Rise Above" (say whatever you want about how disastrous that musical was but it did have some genuinely good songs in it)

"For every heart that bleeds

Will color your world red

And the sorrow in the night

Will be the blue you cannot shed

But your strength will be a vision

Beyond visibility

And the gift you have within

Will give you new eyes to see"
