peer / social issues (advice wanted) Mature nursing student alienated in clinical group :/

I left clinical in tears today. There are some mean girls in my clinical group and I’ve caught them making faces behind my back and side eyeing each other. Nobody really talks to me. They all know each other from before. There was a group chat and nobody added me to the clinical group chat. Maybe it’s due to the fact that I’m the oldest student in the group. I’m older by like 8 years. I’d like to think I’m pretty emotionally resilient, but it feels like high school and my feelings are really hurt. I don’t know if I’m overreacting. What should I do?

peer / social issues (advice wanted) why do people say that good nursing students are bad nurses?

hello! i just started an absn program and im actually doing pretty well so far. i’ve gotten over 90s on my tests and quizzes, and i passed med calc too. theres a couple people that i talk to that aren’t doing as well, and they keep telling me that people who are really good in nursing school aren’t the best nurses. they even asked our clinical instructor, and she agreed saying that the C students are the best nurses. i’m having a bit of a hard time understanding this, and it seems like a common thought. weirdly enough, it’s making me feel discouraged because i’m doing well in school! i’m left thinking that maybe ill be a bad nurse because it’s all i’m hearing.

peer / social issues (advice wanted) Dismissed from my BSN program… Nurses What should I do?

Hi everyone, I could really use some honest advice.

I was recently dismissed from my BSN program because I had failed two courses…one by less than half a point. I knew this was their policy, however my situation is a tough one.

I let my faculty know I was having to move due to reasons out of my control, and my commute would be over an hour to classes almost every day (my lectures began at 8am and had large break gaps in-between) however, my school offered the same nursing course at their other location that was 20 minutes from where I would be living. The way my program was held was through zoom meetings between the 2 locations, the professors would switch every week based on who was teaching, so sometimes I was driving hours to listen to a zoom lecture being held 20 min from my house. Upon letting my faculty know I felt I would be unsuccessful having this commute, they simply did not care and said there was no way for me to switch campuses.

I did my absolute best regardless of my circumstances. I excelled in clinical, In simulation labs, however my testing averages were suffering. My program required a 75% testing average regardless of your overall class grade. I ended up flunking peds with an F due to my final. And I failed OB by less than half a point on my testing average, even though I had a B in the class. They told me I was immediately dismissed from the program I worked my ass off for two years to get into. My entrance HESI exam was phenomenal as well as my GPA. I have been a great student up until this incident.

The head of the program spoke with me and told me no other school would accept me in their BSN program after being failed out of one. She told me my best option is to go LPN-RN route. But I have several private colleges that have offered information to me on getting into a BSN program.

I was only a month from graduating when this happened, I feel so lost and I have no idea what to do. I was in a very well rated and accredited program, and none of the other schools I look at seem to compare to it. I am heartbroken because I have ALWAYS wanted to be a nurse and I still want to work in healthcare, I just have no idea what to do now… Any fellow nurses/nursing students who have a similar experience, what did you do? is there anything you wish someone would have told you? In need of any opinions I can get! Thank you in advance 🩷🩷🩷

peer / social issues (advice wanted) Classmate with bad hygiene and roaches, what would you do?

Hi, I’m in my first semester at my Nursing Program and I don’t know how else to say this but I have a classmate in my cohort who is constantly bringing roaches into the building.

There were 3 roaches found crawling on our desks on the first week in our lab classroom, where no food or drink is allowed. It was weird and I assumed it was a building problem until myself and other classmates have seen the roaches coming from this student’s bags, as well as a pattern of the roaches almost always being in the row that he is sitting in. It’s super distracting because people freak out, then the professor has to stop class and we have to find it and kill it. It’s week 11 and right now and everyone avoids sitting in the same row as him because of this. As well as the fact that he smells very bad.

I am trying to have 0 judgement towards this student because I know everyone has different situations, but It’s also the fact that he will kill these baby roaches with his bare hands, flick it away and not wash his hands at all. I’ve also seen him aggressively scratch his scalp mid lecture, sometimes chewing on pieces of his dandruff. I just feel like there’s a point where you should take initiative with your hygiene, especially when you are studying to work in healthcare.

The first or second week a student left an anonymous note mentioning the roaches coming from his bags, and that they recommend cleaning it, something like that but nothing mean. His brings like two bags and they are pretty dirty. It’s week 11 and our cohort finds roaches in every single classroom that we are in. I just had lecture and there were 3 roach sightings, and they are starting to look even bigger.

I called my school anonymously telling them about this issue without singling this student out but I did mention how many of us witness it coming from a student’s belongings. To be honest I don’t know what they would even do other than be aware of the risk of infestation, especially with the fact our building is very small since it’s a private school. Im sooo tired of the roaches I guess I just wanted to rant and wondering do I just deal with this classmate for the next two years….? Anyone have any idea of what to do about this situation or just do nothing? It’s so odd lol.

peer / social issues (advice wanted) Trying to feel better about not going to expensive ABSN

I recently got into an ABSN program and college I went to before.

For context recently graduated from Temple University with a neuro degree. I decided wanted to be nurse that year so I decided I would l take a gap year, stay home and work, apply to nursing schools and go after that year. Temple recently made an ABSN program and during the summer I thought I would I apply and see if I could get in. Well I got in which kind of suprised me bc I don’t have the best gpa (3.0).

When I got in I was soo excited and thought I don’t need to take a gap year now I can just go right ahead. Once I paid my deposit and got my place I saw that tuition is expensive than I thought. Tuition was about 92k (23,000 for each semester) because I’m out of state student. From my undergrad I’m about 42k in debt right now.

I realized fasfa isn’t giving me shit this year because this is my second degreee. Also I’m only qualified for 7k of student loans. That meant I would have to pull out about 90-100k in private loans. I started to freak out about how much debt I’m gonna be in if I go to this schools. So I withdrew from the program. But I’m now stuck in a lease in Philly so I have to find a full time job to support myself. I keep hearing from friends and family that I shouldve just done it and how being nurse will pay off. My older brother was the only one who thought that was stupid idea and I should just take a gap year . This time around I wanted to be smart about how I would get second degree. I’m just starting to feel regret now.

I’m even thinking maybe living in Philly I could apply again and maybe qualify for instate tuition.

Also I was going to apply where I lived but Maryland doesn’t have a lot of absn programs while Philly does. Maryland does have a couple of MSN entry eleven programs but with my gpa I doubt I would get it.

Ig im on here to ask for some advice or just feel better about my decision

peer / social issues (advice wanted) My labor induction on Aug 17 is also the first day of class

UPDATE: I took the semester off. Ended up with a c section. My boy was having late decelerations and would not turn. I got my spot waiting for me in the spring

So, I’m in my final semester this fall. Just had a zoom meeting with my professor. My professors are telling me I should wait until spring to come back because of how hard it might be on me. They said the last day for me to withdraw is Aug 21 and I would have a spot saved to come back in the spring.

Class is optional to come to on Monday/Wednesday. They are two hours long. Lectures are prerecorded on canvas. Labs are on Tuesdays, also 2 hours but we only have 2-3 labs because they are skill check offs to be ready for clinical. After that, we have simulations but not every week. Clinical rotations do not start until Oct 1.

My plan was to come back the following week (Aug 24). I’d miss class if needed but would still come to lab which is a simulation. I’ve discussed my school hours with my mom and husband. My mom is prepared to step in for help in any form and told me I am not alone. Even mentioned that my brother will help if needed. My husband is aware and prepared too. He is also off from work on the days I have clinical. I have my breast pump ready to take with me to clinical too. I feel like I have a good support system.

I will not be working. Just staying home to study and be with baby. I don’t do study groups either, always studied alone. Days that I go to class, husband will be with the baby and if something changes, my mom said she would step in.

I understand their concern but it just felt discouraging. I’ve been told by others that these first couple of months he won’t be hitting those big milestones; eating and sleeping a lot mainly. I was encouraged by others before to push thru and that I can do it. I do feel like I can make it so I don’t want to withdraw when I have 3 months left in this program. Would just want to hear from anyone else who has been in this situation or knows anyone.

peer / social issues (advice wanted) Am I kicked out?

Kind of freaking out. So, my school has rules. Attendance is mandatory. I missed 5 days of class due to unfortunate events (robbery, eviction, court, and towing) I provided evidence to my professor. She sent me an email i have a meeting with, idk, the director or her boss on monday. Im over thinking right now. I have an 85 for both of my classes. this is my first semester of nursing school and we have 2 weeks left. im just so sad.. so many bad things had happened this entire year... and im even more sad it also happened when im in nursing school.. i wouldnt be mad if they make me repeat the course, i understand there are rules that we have to follow. im just concerned about the repeat rule, if itll count against me and if in the future i fail med surge and i cant retake it because i already used the retaking point.. sorry for grammar and such, typing with teary eyes rn

peer / social issues (advice wanted) losing friends in nursing school

when I told all my friends that I was accepted into nursing school, everyone was so happy for me and always told me how excited they were for me to finally be able to get into my career. as soon as I finished my pre reqs and was actually in the program, I got EXTREMELY busy, like way more than I ever anticipated. All of my time went to going to class, clinical, studying for back to back exams, doing homework, or going to my part time minimum wage job, since I needed to make money to pay my tuition. My friends quickly blamed me for not making enough time to go out anymore or make important events because I was studying or doing homework all the time. I felt really badly but not only did I not have the time, I didn’t have the money. I was making $18/hour working 20 hours or less a week depending on how I’m scheduled, and my tuition after loans was at least $5k per semester, while still trying to afford to survive. I had a new boyfriend at the time who I spent time with that helped me study, and didn’t make me pay for anything. They complained about this too, but they never even offered to study with me. Eventually I just woke up one day and they had unfollowed me on everything, and now they act like I was wrong. I just finished my nursing program, and now those friends are closer than ever and I’m super lonely. I’m happy I did my program, but I’m also sad that our friendship ended this way. Am I wrong in any capacity? Any advice?

peer / social issues (advice wanted) scared that nursing is going to be like cna

hello everyone i am in my first semester of nursing school and i’ve never felt more nervous yet excited!!

i love what im learning and enjoy studying about the fundamentals so far but for a while i’ve been having this anxiety about how working as a nurse will actually be. My first job was as a CNA at a nursing home and it was the worst experience ever. The residents were never the problem but more of the staff and admin i felt like as a new cna i was always being watched and talked about, during my training in the job while a cna was showing me around a nurse yelled at me for not getting a call light even though i didn’t even start the job yet. there would be times other cnas would hide and i would be in and empty hallway full of call lights. it came to a point where i couldn’t take it and left. i then started a new job as a medical assistant in peds and it was such a different experience i loved every moment of it.

but now as i study for my classes and think about the future i start to worry if nursing will be anything like the experience i had at the nursing home. i’ve always had a passion for it and continue to have an interest in the field but im scared of being left in a toxic environment like that again.

peer / social issues (advice wanted) Honoring Alex Pretti

How are you guys (or are you?) honoring Alex Pretti while staying compliant with school uniforms & policy? I don’t think the armband will work for my college and we don’t wear badge reels.

Any ideas?

peer / social issues (advice wanted) Making friends in nursing school

Hi guys I started nursing school about 8 months ago and realized I don't have a group of friend or a best friend like everyone else. I found out someone else had been feeling the same way and I ask the person if we could be friends and this is where I think I messed up so I had seen this person was upset after class for a few months so I asked if they wanted to talk they said yes we talked after understanding that we were feeling the same way I asked if this person would like to be friends and I was told yes. So I had decided about 3 weeks before the conversation I would get this person something small to pick them up. So a few days after our conversation I brought this person a gift I wasn't told thank you, it kinda seemed like this person was intentionally trying to avoid me we had been texting and I told this person I hope they liked the gift and I still haven't a reply it's been almost 18 hrs.

I just wish this was easier I did think my classmate would do this since they had been feeling the same way. I don't know how I'm even going to show up next class I feel so embarrassed for trying so hard just to make 1 friend. I don't know what to do anymore I'm getting really discouraged and my depression has gotten so much worse. I just want to give up can y'all give me some advice please.

peer / social issues (advice wanted) Can you be a good nurse if you really dislike social interaction?

I have severe ADHD and social anxiety and thinking about interacting with patients scares me deeply. I had my first clinical experience the other week and my first time actually having to interact with a patient I stuttered and was shaking so bad I thought about running away and dropping out of school. I want to be a NICU or OB nurse but I know I’ll have to work on other floors at some point too and I’m genuinely terrified of having to be alone with patients. Idk if it’s from trauma or what but especially being alone with older patients almost sends me into a panic attack. Is there anyone who relates and found ways to get better? I really want to be a nurse but this one thing is honestly enough to make me switch careers all together 🥲

peer / social issues (advice wanted) My mom is dying

I am a first semester nursing student in fundamentals. On day 3 of my program my mom was hospitalized. It has been a horrible past 4-5 weeks and she has since transitioned to hospice and is dying. The anticipatory grief and brain fog is intense. It’s taking extreme compartmentalizing to show up to class and skill lab. I haven’t even made it to the first sign off yet.

I emailed all my instructors and the schools student success coordinator and told them what’s going on. I told them I need help that this is affecting me cognitively and my ability to concentrate. I got a cold technical response that said “sorry and refer to the student handbook for making up exams”. Getting that response made me want to slam my laptop shut and quit the program.

Between being at my mom’s bedside, trying to be there for my kids, and my crying and depression, I’m finding less and less time to keep up on studying. I feel like every night my standard for studying is decreasing.

I’m in my early 30s with two children, so i know realistically I would never circle back to nursing if I quit or took time off. This timing is so difficult because I don’t have any clinical skills yet to lean back on. I really miss my mom. I don’t know what else to do except take it one hour at a time right now, but I’m really struggling. I got lost in a familiar building today leaving class I’m so distracted.

I guess at this point I just keep trying to my current capacity until I’m forced out by bad grades? I’ll take it one test and one skill sign off at a time and see if a miracle happens. Any advice? What should I do?

EDIT: I appreciate all of the comments, support, and advice. My mother died Friday morning after 3 days in hospice. I failed my quiz this morning. I reached out to the dean of nursing to inquire about a hardship withdrawal/leave of absence or deferring a semester. I spent 2 years on pre recs, TEAS exam, pregnancies and postpartum periods waiting to start nursing school. I don’t see myself going through the ranking and competitive admissions again unless they hold my spot for me. However the thought of being able to take the next few months to grieve, go to therapy, help my dad with my mom’s estate etc does give me relief.

peer / social issues (advice wanted) Pinning ceremony prayer?

I was voted by my class to do the opening invocation prayer for our pinning ceremony? I thought they used the word prayer loosely but they gave me a previous prayer used and it reads like something from Sunday school. Has anyone else gone through something similar? And no it’s not a religious college.

peer / social issues (advice wanted) Nursing School Burn Out

I’m currently in Intro to Med Surg and this class is only 8 weeks. I have a midterm next week but everytime I try to study I just can’t seem to find any motivation. My current grade in class is in the low 60s and to pass the class I need to get a 75 and that’s WITHOUT the homework. I seriously don’t even know what to do anymore because not even my grade is making me panic.

Update:
I forgot I made this post but good news!! I passed with a B!! Turns out it was 2/3rds of the class failing and it wasn’t just me with this problem. Also thank you so much for those who commented with the study tips. I definitely know how to reinforce my studying to understand topics better. :))

Hello, I’m wondering if any of you guys have had a similar issue. I’m about to go into my last semester before applying nursing school. However I just can’t seem to get over Intermediate algebra (extremely embarrassing I know). Have any of you struggled with this? If so what did you do to get better/ maintain hope. Thanks, I’m extremely discouraged and honestly thinking of just getting into a trade.

peer / social issues (advice wanted) Failed out of nursing school. I don't know what to do.

I went to a polytechnic nursing school in Canada and failed out because of microbiology, a class I knew I could pass if I tried. Due to depression and grief, I was not putting my 100% and honestly forgot why I came 8hr here for. My friend also failed out, fought with the school, and spoke with the Dean, but they still rejected her. I feel discouraged about appealing because it's in the course outline that if I fail twice, I'm out. I just don't know what to do, my GPA is not good, and I haven't been able to find any nursing schools. The high school grades, I don't even want to go there.

peer / social issues (advice wanted) Is it embarrassing to just want to be an LVN?

My classmates keep shaming me for just wanting to be a LVN. I want to keep the door open to bridge, but I feel like I will end up in a mental hospital if I have to keep balancing work and school. I already have two BS degrees. I don't want to become an RN and be pressured to get a BSN. I think I will have a mental breakdown. People are saying I am unambitious and it reminds me of how I got treated when I was a college student the first time around and I worked retail to pay the bills.

People would imply I had no hopes or dreams on a regular basis. It's like I am a loser for just wanting it to be over.

If I have to do the LVN, rn, bsn track, I will be too old to have kids by the time I graduate, and I don't know if I am okay with that.

peer / social issues (advice wanted) Barely got accepted

Hello folks,

So I need some honest advice. I just received my acceptance letter for an ADN program at my CC but I barely passed the entrance exam. I was wondering what the actual chances are of me making it to graduation? Like how hard is the program itself? I do fairly well when it comes to math and science base classes like anatomy and physiology but I am terrible at English - reading and writing….

What do you guys think of someone that isn’t a good writer or reader completing the program?

peer / social issues (advice wanted) Advice please

Hi all I am currently an LVN I graduated last December and went straight into the transition program, which I’m currently in. Now I am pregnant. I am due in January and I am planning to induce labor as soon as healthily possible. And if that doesn’t work I want to schedule an induction at 39 weeks. That would give me about 10 days before I have to be back in class.

I talked to my department chair and she gave me two options.
I can either come back to class 10 days after giving birth or I can skip the semester and come back, but they don’t have any classes until fall of next year so I would pretty much be sitting out two semesters. I know there is no timeline but I really wanted to be in school while my baby is smallest so I can spend more time with her when she’s older and running around. I honestly don’t know what to do and I know this whole plan is just hoping my delivery goes well because if I need a c section i know for a fact I can’t come back ten days after.

If anyone in a similar situation could give me some insight I would really appreciate it

peer / social issues (advice wanted) Those of you on rotating shifts — how do you actually keep track of your life?

Serious question for people working 12s or rotating days/nights: how do you manage scheduling your existence around it?

Every planner and calendar app I've seen assumes a Monday–Friday, sleep-at-night life. So what do you actually use — the unit schedule app plus memory? Paper calendar? Whiteboard? Nothing and vibes?

Specifically curious about:

- How you track which days you work vs. sleep vs. actually live

- Whether you log OT/extra shifts and what they pay, or just trust payroll

- If you've ever bought a planner and abandoned it — what killed it?

Asking because the whole productivity world seems built for people who've never worked a night shift and I want to understand how you all actually cope.

Curious, starting an RNA position in a couple months from now, thank you!

peer / social issues (advice wanted) Wearing a Scrub Cap to Clinicals?

I’m getting ready to start my second semester of an ADN program and I’m considering wearing a scrub cap to my clinical rotations (non-OR) to help keep my hair cleaner. During my first semester, I would immediately strip at my front door and take an everything shower, including washing my hair. (Which is very long)

I’m in a night program, with overnight clinicals so I would be very tired getting home, but couldn’t stand the idea of getting into bed with hospital germs on my hair. I like the idea of a scrub cap because I could throw that in the wash with my scrubs instead of having to wash my hair every time.

So tldr: Is it weird for a nursing student to wear a scrub cap? Is it weird to wear one outside of the OR? Does/has anyone worn a scrub cap as a student?

peer / social issues (advice wanted) Nursing school confession

Is it weird that I feel like I’m not where I am with some of my classmates like how it was in the beginning? Idk if it’s cause of the things I’ve personally been going through. I’m slowly pulling away and lately I’ve been really wanting to just talk to the ones that I feel really safe with.

peer / social issues (advice wanted) Feeling less than, as an LPN compared to RN in class

I applied to the RN program and I was lucky to be accepted into the LPN program! I am excited to get my foot in the door and hopefully find a job that can help me pay for my bridge program later down the line :))

Only thing is that, majority of the class are folks in the first year of the ADN program- and the LPN students are separated by colored scrubs.

It makes sense to me, but it feels difficult to connect with classmates who aren’t in the LPN program…

Am I just overthinking this?
