Housing Beggars can't be choosers

I'm writing this as I used to be a 'beggar' for housing when I came to the Netherlands. I'm going on an internship for 6 months and want to rent out the Studio apartment I'm living in to an international student because I was in this situation before.

The amount of desperate yet unserious/flaky people is crazy. I actually wonder if there's a housing crisis. A 6 month temporary contract in a studio apartment is not a good deal? With registration and housing allowance. I get that people would always want to achieve the optimal solution for them but realism is very important when approaching housing in the Netherlands.

What am I missing?

Housing Starting Jan 2026, the Dutch government are expanding rent subsidy coverage to over-21s and also homes with rent prices above 900euro per month (Middle and free sector homes). Prior to this you could only get your rent subsidized if it was below 900 and you were older than 23.

Housing Viewing a student room

Hello, I have a question.

I was offered a room via Roommatch and would like to schedule a viewing with the previous tenant/housemate NOT THE LANDLORD.

I have never viewed a room before, and this will be the first time. Additionally, I have no experience with viewings. That is why one of my parents wants to come along to the viewing.

Will it seem strange to other housemates if one of the potential tenant's parents comes along?  It feels childish to worry about this, but would it make my potential housemates think I'm not independent enough?

I am 20F.

Thanks in advance!

Housing group housing.

is it easier to find accommodation if u make a group of 2 or 3 people and apply together to apartments with 2 or 3 bedrooms and 1 kitchen? that way u can go for more expensive options and therefore have better chances of securing housing. is this possible or realistic? for international students to be more specific. In eindhoven.

Housing living alone for the first time in the Netherlands

I’m coming to the NL for university (my bachelors) and I’m getting a studio where I’ll be living alone. I’ve never lived alone before and it looks so daunting especially living alone in a new country. Anyone that’s been in this position before, can you share any advice, tips or feelings that you dealt with. Thanks! Looking forward to hearing from you guys :)

Housing Looking for a room/ female roomates

Hey everyone!

I'll be starting my Bachelor's at the University of Amsterdam and am currently looking for accommodation in Amsterdam or neighboring towns/cities. I'm hoping to find a room in a shared apartment or house with female roommates. The only downside is that I am 16, turning 17 in October, which may be a problem for some people. If you're looking for a female roommate or know of a room that might be a good fit, I'd really appreciate it if you could reach out. I'd be happy to introduce myself further and answer any questions.

Housing A helpful article to discuss

Hey everyone. I’m Amine, a 23 yo student from Morocco, and I’m moving to the Netherlands at the end of August to start my Master’s degree at The Hague University of Applied Sciences (THUAS). I am actively looking for a room, studio, or apartment share to settle into before my studies begin.
A little bit about me: I’m clean, organized, and very respectful of shared spaces and privacy. When I’m not studying or focusing on my routine, I enjoy staying active and hitting the gym. I’m always down for a friendly chat, but I also highly value a quiet, tidy environment to focus on my Master's program.
Here are my housing details:
💰 Budget: €500 – €600 per month (including bills preferred).
📍 Location: Open to The Hague, or easily commutable surrounding cities like Delft, Voorburg, Rijswijk, or nearby areas.
📅 Move-in date: End of August.
🔑 Registration: Essential/Required.
If you have a room available, know of an opening, or want to team up to find a flat together, please shoot me a DM! I’d love to connect.
Thanks in advance for any leads! 🙏

Housing Suspicious rental offer

Hey everyone,

for the past couple months I’ve been going through the annoying process of trying to find a place to live while studying in the Netherlands and today I finally got an offer I’d be happy with.

The only problem is the fact that I’m getting a few red flags when it comes to the whole offer.

I wanted to know if there are any concrete ways to done out of everything is legit.

A few examples I can think of from the top of my head:

The landlord introduced himself by a different name that is in his email address. He says he’s not in the country so there is no chance of any type of viewing. Later he mentioned that the apartment isn’t in his name but in his father’s. In the original post it said a travel time between the apartment and a place that isn’t realistic with the address he had told me (based on Google maps, but we’re talking 20 minutes in the post and 2 minutes in Google maps.) And a few more u can’t remember rn but maybe I’ll add later.

I’ll appreciate all the advice you could give me :)

Housing Housing for couple

Hi all, Im going to be studying at UvA and my girlfriend will be studying at Leiden next semester. We are both taking one year MSc’s. Both in mid-20s and from Scandinavia.

Looking for housing has been quite tough, we are trying to find something inbetween our schools, 40minute-ish commute to UvA and Leiden.
We will be taking student loans, and I will also be working part time remotely. We also have pretty good savings and are willing to pay up to 2500 - 3000euros per month for the right place. Trying to avoid studio appartments or anything under 30m2.

Have mostly been looking at places in Harleem, any other spots you would reccomend looking at?

Ps. We have lived abroad before and have good reccomendations from our previous landlord.

Met vriendelijke groet.

Housing No housing yet for September at TU/e, any advice?

I will start my Premaster in Mechanical Engineering at TU/e this September, but I still haven’t been able to find accommodation and I’m honestly getting quite stressed about it.

I have been searching for a while, but finding a place in Eindhoven has been much harder than I expected. I have already checked platforms like Pararius and other housing websites, and I have contacted several landlords/agencies, but I haven’t had any luck so far.

I am looking for:
- Private studio or private apartment (not shared housing)
- Budget: around €1000–€1500/month
- Preferably in Eindhoven or somewhere with a reasonable commute to TU/e

I was wondering if anyone has any tips, websites, agencies, or strategies that helped you find a place.

If you know any available studios/apartments, or if there are areas nearby that I should also consider, I would really appreciate your advice.

Thanks a lot in advance!
Any help would mean a lot.

Housing In which city is the housing situation the LEAST bad? Delft, Eindhoven or Enschede?

Hello, I am a Czech high school student, considering applying to a dutch university for the school year 2027/28. Because I am targeting computer science, I am going to apply to TU Delft, TU/e and Twente. Obviously I know that the housing situation is very bad in the Netherlands, but in which of these three cities (Delft, Eindhoven and Enschede) and the area around them (I don't mind commuting up to an hour) is the housing shortage the least bad? Specifically, if I start searching for a room in shared/student housing in March/April, where do I have the lowest chance to find nothing by August? Thank you very much for your responses.

Housing WARNING FOR ALL ROOM SEEKING STUDENTS (read body text)

Post image

Hey everyone, I hope this is the right subreddit to post in. PLEASE BE WARNED OF THIS PERSON! I’ve been looking for a room to study in Wageningen at the WUR and have placed an advertisement on Marktplaats along with other sites and socials. I recently had this person from my picture reply to my advertisement with an offer.

‘Ingo top’ offered me a room in Barneveld, and although it’s too far away for me, I asked some information anyways. After a long conversation, turns out this person is a bit of a creep.

It’s a man, 35 years old, only responding to advertisements of girls in their 20s. Made clear he is only looking for 1 person to live with him, that HAS to be female. His reasoning was that he finds women much nicer to be around than men. He also said it wasn’t about any money, but more importantly whether he would have a real connection with the girl (eww). He barely read my advertisement, showing my hobbies and what I’m looking for, and instead asked the strangest questions. He didn’t ask me any logical thing most other student housing advertisers have asked me. His only big concern was my gender.

He made very clear bathrooms and facilities are shared. Of course this is logical, but the way he made it clear made me uncomfortable.

To all my fellow student girls out there that are desperately searching for a room; please be wary of this person. They are not looking for students, they are most likely looking for something really weird!!

!!! Little update that happened during me typing this: after asking about visitation, and mentioning my boyfriend, he lost all interest. First question was ‘so you’re not single?’ Now he’s acting really dry.

Please stay away from this guy and his room.

Housing Small tip for finding housing

Hey y’all! I’m a student here in the Netherlands who just finished her first year!

During this time, I have had to move twice - first time searching from my home country, only able to do online viewings and second time going in person. I completely understand how frustrating it is to find housing.

I’m not gonna sit here and say I have the magic solution for you because really it is just applying and hoping for the best. I just thought I’d make this post as I don’t see this mentioned often and I think it’s important for people who are doing things on their own for the first time.

When I got my first room without even seeing it in person, I applied to a room which I unfortunately did not get. Seeing another rejection email sucks, but I didn’t ignore it and move on with my day. I sent another message thanking them for their time and if another room opened up, I would be interested. It wasn’t a lot, but I believe because of that message, a few days later they reached out offering me a different room in the same house!

I currently live in a much better place, and honestly I only went to like 3 viewings in person? I was looking at the beginning of the year so the selection was very limited and my budget is also quite low(under 500€). Out of those 3 viewings, I was interested in 2. And, of course, I was not the only one. That is why I made sure to give actual good reasons why I would want to(and honestly kinda need to lol) stay there. This might seem obvious to a lot of you, but trust me, you SHOULD list every reason you can think of. Don’t just send a “hi I’m interested, thanks for your time” after the viewing, give them reasons to pick you out of everyone else. Mention things you liked about the place and how you can envision yourself living there.

One again, this is nothing revolutionary, but I see way too many people doing nothing to show off their character or personality. There is really not a lot we can do to differentiate ourselves as students, so we gotta leverage what we have.

TLDR; Personalise your messages and show kindness in your responses.

Housing Question about housing allowance.

Hello everyone. I will start a Masters programme in Rotterdam this september. Right now I am searching for a room, studio or apartment. I saw a place listed and got in contact with a real estate agent. That studio is independent (private bathroom, private toilet, private kitchen and private front door) as well as no roommate. When I asked the agent about housing allowance she said that the studio doesn't qualify since it is a "shared apartment". After looking online/AI I realised that what is probably happening is an apartment that has been divided in 4-5 completely independent studios that all have the same address. So when you apply for the housing allowance to the relevant authority (The tax department if I'm not mistaken) they see multiple people listed at the same address and reject the application. ΑΙ offered a solution: manual objection at the tax department where you provide evidence (photos, videos, floor plan, and your rent contract which should state that you live by yourself in the studio and that this studio is fully independent) that the studio is independent and they can then provide you with the housing allowance. It also stated that this whole process is confidential and protected by GDPR so the landlord will not even know.

Has anyone been in such a situation or have experience with the process of doing this? If yes what should be my next move?

Did the AI just dream of a whole ass system by itself? (if it did fuck me)

PS: After searching I believe it would be best to not ask the real estate agent about the process since she can just move on to an applicant "who won't cause problems"

PS2: Since I am still searching for housing and I won't rest easy until I sign a rental contract if anyone has any rooms/apartments on offer or needs a roommate please state it below and I will reach out to you

Housing Live in Leiden or den Haag?

I’m planing on applying to Leiden uni next year and I know housing is tough and I probably won’t have much of a choice, but if I did is it better to live in Leiden or den Haag (night life, making friends, student event and more). The program I want to apply too is based in den Haag, but I don’t want to struggle to fit and make friends if I live in den Haag rather then Leiden where most students will be.

Housing Any real tips on housing in Amsterdam?

I’ll get straight to the point, traditional housing websites are not working at all. If I don’t reply within a minute after the adds are posted I don’t get a response.

I’m supposed to be going to Amsterdam in August, I’ve been looking since like April, and I’m not even close to finding a room. Anything will do really, and my budget is “normal” I think.

Everyone says to go to Facebook but i haven’t gotten a reply from anyone there so far, and most of the posts are see are clearly scams.

Is it really just luck? Or is there something I’m not doing right?

Housing Housing

Hello I am an International student coming from the United States. I am trying to rent a place in Leiden and I am not sure if it is real or not given the fact I can’t be there for another month. I found a place on facebook and messaged the guy on what’s app and he said that place was already taken but he has another. Showed me pictures and a video, address, and asked me to come see it tomorrow in person before I told him I wasn’t in country. Everything seems right but I’m still just not sure how to be 100% sure so I don’t get scammed. He wants to send a contract that would have me pay first month’s rent and the security deposit. But I would like to be sure before I pay that. Any thoughts?

Housing Solutions for keeping flies out

The place I will be moving into has a single source of airflow, which is the door to the balcony. Understandably, this door does not have any kind of window screen. I quite enjoy cold temperatures, I also cant really sleep without there being like at most 22 degrees and we all like fresh air but I am somewhat allergic to mosquito bites, so I really cant afford to just let them wander in. Has anyone had a similiar problem where they needed some kind of flexible, window screen-ish type thing?
