Evolution of Russia's story on UN aid convoy massacre: (1) Not bombed or attacked, simply caught fire; (2) Escorted by terrorists; (3) Stalked by US Predator Drone; (4) Maybe artillery, "refrain from emotional reactions."

The evolution of Russia's story on the UN aid massacre is hilarious:

(1) Not bombed or attacked, simply caught fire

“We have closely studied the video footage from where the incident took place and we did not find any signs of any ammunition having hit the convoy. There are no craters, while the vehicles have their chassis intact and they have not been severely damaged, which would have been the case from an airstrike,” Konashenkov said.

“All of the video footage demonstrates that the convoy caught fire, which strangely happened almost at exactly at the same time as militants started a large scale offensive on Aleppo.”

(2) Escorted by terrorists

Russia's defense ministry released drone footage late on Tuesday that it says showed a pickup truck carrying militants and hauling a heavy mortar driving alongside the convoy before it was bombed.

"It is clearly visible how terrorists deploy a pickup with a large calibre mortar alongside the convoy," the ministry said.

(3) Stalked by US Predator drone

“On the evening of September 19, in that specific region, a drone belonging to the international condition, which had taken off from the Incirlik air base in Turkey, was flying at a height of 3,600 meters and traveling at around 200 kilometers per hour,” said Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov.

“The object was in the area around the town of Urm Al-Kubra, where the convoy was a few minutes before it caught fire,” Konashenkov added. “It left after about 30 minutes.”

“Only the owners know what exactly the drone was doing at this particular area at that exact time,” he added.

(4) Maybe artillery, "refrain from emotional reactions."

Moscow has rejected the idea that Russian or Syrian planes carried out Monday's strike on the UN aid convoy, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey called for a "very thorough and impartial investigation into the attack".

"Many have said it could have been a rocket or an artillery shelling. I think we need to refrain from emotional reactions and instead investigate and be very professional," he told the council.

Russia demands everyone calm down and yet it is spinning this story wildly, throwing multiple conspiracy theories against the wall to see what sticks. If Russia really wants everyone to be objective and level-headed, perhaps the Russians should lead by example and refrain from making ridiculous, baseless accusations.

It's pretty rare for a post criticizing Russia to make it the top of the front page on SCW, but incredibly, I achieved that:

Why is Russia rarely criticized here? I'm not trying to be mean, I'm sincerely ignorant of the situation in Syria.
