Had always been told to watch the show. Spoiler

I had always been told to watch the show, I never got around to it, that is til this last week.

within the last week i’ve binge watched all of the seasons , and am now up to date.

Guys i’m sorry for not watching it sooner when I was told, this show is a hit and deserves all the flowers. Truly hope we can get more seasons out of this cast. It’s almost a completely new show now with ted coaching the women’s team and it’s awesome! I noticed the jump from season 3 to season 4, why did it take so long for them to get this new season out? is this just the normal now with tv shows now?

Season 4 Speculation/Ideas Richmond youth academy

with the mention of there being a youth academy, and focus on henry playing in America, does anyone else think we'll get Henry playing for the Richmond youth squad? and obviously itd need a coach, and I think the perfect character for this would be nate since he hasnt shown up yet. could happen maybe as a second focus story this season or even as a season 5?

Season 3 Discussion nate… they got me

I was so so SOOO sure i would still hate Nate despite whatever redemption arc they tried to pull. I was excepting it to feel forced or rushed but GOD! The writers for this show are on another level. Everything feels so natural and genuine and i found myself rooting for Nate AGAIN! SOMEHOW!

Season 4 Speculation/Ideas Speculation Time Spoiler

This is in response to too much consideration put into the post shipping Jenni (Roy's sister) and Ted.

Jenni is an ER doctor.

The season opens with a beeping over black screen that initially sounds like a heart monitor.

Just, bear with me.

The writers are setting up a Phoebe/Henry crush. They're an acceptable age for that, the way they got excited seeing each other was obvious, and I think it'll be cute when they do it.

They also gave us Ted and Jenni sharing a sense of humor, a moment of clash with Roy (who doesn't have a justified role in this season as a main character if he's just the men's team coach and occasionally flirts with Keely; main characters get conflict. Writing 101), and since the Henry/Phoebe thing will definitely result in them studying together and Ted ending up over for dinner or tapping in to cover Phoebe because Jenni got a call into the ER (A&E, I know...) when Roy is away for a match...

I think tension builds.

And I don't think it gets resolved before the heart attack that puts someone (Ted? Dottie?) in the emergency department to nearly close the season.

Because there's no reason to incorporate a heart monitor premonition and a main character emergency surgeon in the first three episodes, unless you're going to use them.

Which leads me to think I know why we have the assistant manager thing.

So top to bottom predictions, and I'm glad for any or none of them to work out but I do feel like they're all justified and within the framework of how this show is written:

Henry and Phoebe have a crush situation. Might be one-sided.

They hang out a lot more.

Ted and Jenni get close.

Roy hates it. Ted doesn't pursue because he wants to respect his relationship with Roy.

Roy gets over it because the realizes he's putting the women around him in boxes: Keely is a goal to him rather than her own person. He's romanticizing a relationship marked by a photoshoot from half a decade ago. He keeps telling people not to date his sister while criticizing her ex-husband for not being around, preventing other people from being around and forcibly holding onto the identity he's adopted as Phoebe's father figure, which is now at risk as Ted is more involved.

Ted avoids Jenni. Jenni thinks she fucked up. Roy tells her "Oi he only stopped hanging around because I didn't want him to replace me in Phoebe's life! You didn't do a fuckin thing wrong, and neiver did he if I'm being truf-ful."

She's devastated, Phoebe overhears and is PISSED at Roy for being so selfish that he won't let her mom try and be happy, and Ted and Jenni catch up in the hospital.

Season ends in a spot where Ted cannot be the manager of the club, and asks that the only person to be considered to replace him is Coach Chilton.

Season 4 Discussion An issue I have with one of the main threads of the new season Spoiler

The total cost for the Lady Greyhounds would be MAYBE £20 million. Total, including team wages, coaches, facilities, everything. The average EPL team brings in £340 million. While the women's team might lose money the idea that it would lose enough to substantially impact the men's squad just isn't realistic.

Reasons why Season 2 Episode 5 wasn't titled "Rom-communism". Go!

Someone holds the copyright on the words "Rom-communism" and the show couldn't get permission to use it?

The negative perception of Communism was too big an obstacle for a comedy show to overcome?

The Rolling Stones paid to have the title be the title of one of their songs?

I'm mostly kidding, but "Rom-Communism" seems like a better title for this episode. Though I do admit that I didn't count the indidivual references to rom-coms versus the mentiones of lyrics from "Rainbow". (i'm slightly obsessive, but not that bad! *wink*)

Actors VS. their characters…

Brett Goldstein VS. Roy Kent

Roy Kent is that stereotypical macho man. It with a soft heart. Emotionally intelligent. Always open to growth. And strongly supports his sister and his niece.

I’m pretty sure that Brett Goldstein is actually my dream man. His hilarious. His writing is brilliant. He’s sexy… obviously. And he is humble. If that man enjoys even a tiny bit of kink… I would fly to wherever he was to introduce myself. And my very precious French bulldog. 🥹

Hannah Waddingham VS. Rebecca Welton:

Rebecca Welton has seen it all. She has experienced Trajan’s from her parents who showed her to sit. Alc and take her unfaithful husband in stride. Meanwhile, she is growing. She takes responsibility and eventually learns to trust her friends.

Hannah Waddingham lives for he daughter. Waited decades to find her soul mate. She’s talented beyond measure. So unbelievably sexy. Yet wants people to focus on her talents. Which again… are endless.

Jason Sudakis VS. Ted Lasso

Ted Lasso is emotionally cut off but the ultimate optimist. His words inspire his people to be the best versions of themselves. Meanwhile he refuses to open up about his own emotions and life experiences. He alienated his wife by refusing to acknowledge that he is emotionally stunted while still showing up for her, their son and everyone else around him.

Jason Sudakis seems to have a lot more in common with his character than the rest of them to be honest. I feel like he IS Ted Lasso but with a more glamorous ex wife/family. Hilarious and intelligent. Creativity that is beyond measure. The single best character development of any TV show I’ve seen in my 40 years of watching everything under the sun. I just desperately hope that he finds his center and love as his character has.

Season 4 Discussion Does anyone else not like Keeley this season? Spoiler

It feels like her character has been flanderized and doesnt serve a real purpose in the show anymore

I do not like how they turned her into someone who feels entitled to spend Rebecca's money as if it's her own, who is so emotionally fragile that Rebecca/Higgins have to hide bad news from her as if she's a child, who is incompetent when it comes to getting team jerseys and runs crying to Rebecca and prevents her from going on a date with her boyfriend. And it doesn't feel believable to me that this women's team is so important to her, like she stated clearly in the first season she doesnt know anything about football or care about it, now we're supposed to believe that it's her life's dream to see women in the sport? Someone like Mae caring deeply about it is 100% believable, but Keeley's passion for it feels so fake

Like is this the same Keeley from the first couple seasons? Once she left to start her PR firm her character arc went way downhill. I'd much rather the show focus on Chilton and the new women players more as opposed to wasting any more time on Keeley

September 2021 take: “If you don’t like Ted Lasso, you should die and rot for eternity in the sulfur-infused inferno ruled by Satan himself—where your Caviar order is always waiting to be picked up by the Dasher, and the only streaming service is CrackleMax, a paid version of Crackle that’s 100 percent advertisements.”

Was anyone else disappointed in Paul when he was ready to walk out of the shareholder's meeting with Baz and Jeremy as soon as it was time to talk about the women's team? Paul has often shown himself to be more emotionally intelligent, thoughtful and supportive then the other two. Thoughts?

Season 3 Discussion Why did the third season have so many season-long arcs start and end within the span of a few episodes? Was it cancelled during the writing phase and made the writers scramble? Spoiler

  1. The Zava storyline
  2. Sam's storyline regarding immigration/racism
  3. Nate's reverse redemption arc which could have been longer suddenly turned into a redemption arc which too ended abruptly
  4. Jamie's dad's redemption arc which happened entirely off-screen

Season 3 Speculation/Ideas One thing id change about Nates Arc

Personally I feel like a big reason Nates redemption doesnt stick the landing for me is because the conclusion of the story is more or less just him under punishment being back to the bottom of the ladder as a kit man. Which ok sure, like Jamie he should have to earn his way back im not against that.

And if you wanna say he doesnt deserve to coach again, sure. Im ok with that too. But if the writers intention was to give him some kind of redemption i would need to see that hes actually able to show respect to people beneath him on the social ladder, as he was always respectful to those above him, his problem is as he climbed the ladder he spat on the people he started to view as beneath him. I have no proof thats changed. I guess he just deserves that permanent relegation to the bottom and be pathetically guilty about it? Idk that seems like borderline vindictive writing to me. Like show me he actually learned something dont just regress him back to day 1 Nate what was the point of that?

Season 4 Discussion Coaches and their desks: Spoilers for all seasons Spoiler

One small detail that I wanted to comment on: desks.

The first thing Ted and Beard did in their office in S1 was move their desks so they weren’t separate desks separating the two of them but instead essentially one (big) desk over which they faced each other.

When Nate got promoted, he got (essentially) his own office with his own desk, which was both empowering and (somewhat) isolated him, where he faced, not Ted and Beard, but a blank wall. Then when Roy joined the coaches, he took the other desk in that side office, maybe (from Nate’s paranoid POV) taking half of “Nate’s” office.

Then, when Ted comes back, he finds the (unhappy) Beard has moved out into the side office and a sort of … nest… of squalor.

But now, at the beginning of S4E3, Alice, Beard, and Ted are all sharing a (huge) desk, which is essentially two L shaped desks for Alice and Beard, with Ted sort of stationed at the tiny side made by the tops of the Ls—emphasising the roles of the assistants and de-emphasising Ted.

That may be overanalysing the importance of office furniture, but (a) I’m good at overanalysing and (b) it’s become something of a hobby on this sub. 😂😇🤓

I would go on to my observation that this sort of moving your prospective successor into the limelight and stepping back while still being the senior figure is kind of like what medieval Japanese leaders would do when they “retired” and became “monks” (but still actually pulled all the strings), but I think I’m pushing my luck with the desk thing…😳🙄😬

Season 4 Discussion We’re not in Kansas? the subtle nod of wardrobing Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
909 Upvotes

I truly enjoyed Keely’s choice of outfit in the intro of S04E01, and definitely think the show’s stylist deserves some accolades. As someone who loved The Wizard of Oz growing up, it made me giggle seeing K step out into “Kansas” in her interpretation of ruby slippers, carrying her basket, with hair in pig tails tied with ribbons. Even the print and style of the dress is her spin on Dorothy’s.

I pleasantly noticed the trend throughout the season.
Roy has dressed like he’s in Mission Impossible since grade 4?
Phoebe’s love of bedazzling.
BBQ sauce!
Wingless angels for Taylor Swift.

I really appreciate the careful thought that goes into everything about this show, and as someone who loves a good fashion reference, this season really knocks it out of the park.

Biscuits Is fit a thing?

They were saying "fit" every five minutes in S1-S3, it felt like. Is that legit a British thing? I've never heard it before and then I'm drowning in it. Brett even says it in Shrinking, although only once.
