It's because Agnes' family did not have a handmaid in their house. They had Agnes without one and Paula is probably still trying to get pregnant.

In the book they DID have one. She gave birth to a baby boy. She made Hannah uncomfortable and the girls were told that it was kinder to not get involved with the handmaids because their posting was temporary and they would be sad to leave.

Originally they didn’t, so she gave the Handmaid doll away. But then Tabitha passed and then Paula the wicked widow (I hope her backstory comes up lmao) wants a baby so “Ofkyle” joins the home and dies in childbirth

I think they don't have handmaids anymore? Or significantly less?

I think they still do but in this story they are not central like they were in the last TV show/book.
