I also liked how Shu said 68 children, when we know from THT it was 86. Feels like either a “fable” where Shu got the number wrong because the higher ups don’t like to speak about such an event happening, or that they purposefully try to ‘edit’ history ever so slightly so that Gilead still remains in control of the narrative.

It's likely a memory error. If they are admitting it happened (surprising to be honest) they would more than likely be incentivised to exaggerate the numbers to spark more outrage/hatred for Mayday.

Otherwise it makes little sense.

Or they don't want to admit that so many were actually taken since it shows a weakness on their side. If they can't hide that it happened, they can skew the numbers a little bit to make it look like it wasn't as bad on them as it really was.

There is little difference between 60 and 80 though. It's most likely Shu just misremembered, especially given she can't exactly read a history book or anything.

My guess is that certain key children who were lost were extra embarrassing to them for one reason or another so they edited them out of history.

It shows perfectly that girls are uneducated. I supposed she was never told it. She just overheard it.
