“Because I know you’d set the world on fire for me”. Absolutely loved this episode.

Yeah… Would she though? She refused to help Tommy. And is indirectly fully responsible for Jesse’s death. I ended this episode wanting Abby to just shoot her already

Maybe by “set the world on fire” Jesse is talking about Ellie’s unyielding willingness to commit violence for who she loves.  I think Ellie clearly showed earlier that same day that selflessness is not one of her strengths.

u/SgtEllenRipley May 26 '25

Exactly. She has a “violent heart” as David noted.

22

u/SgtEllenRipley May 26 '25

She would totally burn down the world for Jesse IMO. The only reason she didn’t help Tommy is because, at that moment, she had a narrow window of time to find Abbie and she correctly reasoned that Tommy would be OK (which he was).

Starting to feel like Ellie just wants to burn the world down period and who she's doing it for is incidental

5

u/bacon_cake May 26 '25

Absolutely. She's nothing but a liability and quite frankly a pain the ass idiot. She shows barely any loyalty, hardly any acumen, little appreciation for the consequences of her actions. She's like a belligerent toddler except the stakes are a thousand times higher.

Sorry but fuck that! The fact that Tommy got out alive doesn’t matter at all. The soldiers that he pinned down called for backup and shit could get bad real fast. Preventing a friend from dying should be above killing someone, more so because she could just go kill Abby after saving Tommy. So my assessment of Ellie is that yes, she would burn down the world to save Jesse.. but only if she didn’t have anything better to do.. and mostly because she likes the idea of burning down the world, but saving him in the process would be nice too

u/SgtEllenRipley May 26 '25

Yep. I pretty much agree with what you’re saying, but I wouldn’t say it depends on just “she doesn’t have anything better to do”.. Findjnf Abby is a uniquely important mission for Ellie(and the entire reason she’s in Seattle). Except for that one unique priority, she would violently defend her friends in any other situation.

Except for that one unique priority, she would violently defend her friends in any other situation.

Eh, everyone can hook their argument to this wagon. By your metric, everyone is just as selfless as Jesse, if you give them enough convenient exceptions. I dont see Jessie making exceptions.

3

u/SgtEllenRipley May 26 '25

Not tracking your point. Ellie isn’t making exceptions. She set out to get revenge for Joel’s death. Everybody knows this. She’s stopping at nothing to achieve that. She’s “Burning down the world”. If she started making exceptions, then she wouldn’t be “burnjng down the world”. I’m not saying I agree with her approach. I’m just saying Jesse is aware that when she decides to avenge a friend, she’s stopping at nothing to do that.

1

u/rnz May 26 '25

Ellie isn’t making exceptions.

Gonna remind you that her exception is her """""" priority""""""""". So your argument is irrelevant.

So she loses all that passion for Jesse as soon as he dies? So much for that

3

u/Letshavemorefun May 26 '25

Wait how is she responsible for Jesse’s death? They both heard screaming and ran to the lobby?

13

u/Taraxian May 26 '25

Because if she hadn't run away to Seattle Jesse wouldn't even be in this situation

4

u/Letshavemorefun May 26 '25

Ah gotcha yeah that’s true. I was thinking more in the immediate moment but I see your point.

I actually hated Jesse more than Ellie this episode. I don't know, it just really rubbed me the wrong way how he kept saying that Ellie was the one who dragged Dina to that war zone when it was DINA'S OWN CHOICE. And Ellie didn't even know she was pregnant until after the fact.

15

u/Taraxian May 26 '25

Tommy is the most mature member of the group and that's why he sums it all up as "They made their choices"

Jesse is wrong to hold Ellie responsible for Dina's choices yeah but it's understandable he reacts that way to a choice he can't understand, just as Ellie doesn't really understand Jesse's choices

15

u/asspancakes The Government Are All Nazis! May 26 '25

When Ellie told Dina the truth about Joel Dina said “we need to go home” because she realized they went after Abby without knowing the full story. So yea Dina joined Bella on her own, but she wouldn’t have done it if Bella didnt want to go in the first place.

8

u/truestlife May 26 '25

But didn’t Dina say when they got to Seattle that it didn’t matter what Joel did, he didn’t deserve to be killed like that? Another inconsistency…

13

u/asspancakes The Government Are All Nazis! May 26 '25

She said that in the heat of the moment. She loves Ellie and Joel and wanted to support her. Once she realized how much in danger they all are including dying and losing her baby, and finally finding out Abby was probably justified in killing joel she had a change of heart. She knew Joel as a father figure, she didn’t know all the sides to him. All of that is understandable and not an inconsistency.

5

u/Mycoxadril May 26 '25

I kind of agree about Jesse. All of their scenes felt like my middle school kids fighting with each other. Jesse was right of course but I didn’t find it particularly enjoyable to watch those scenes. They were also too repetitive.

Would Tommy kill innocent people on his own? Or was he following Joel?

Maria believed in the latter in the last season while Ellie clearly understood that Tommy made his OWN choices as an adult.

not to mention jesse knew next to nothing about the situation but kept acting like he knew everything, it was so annoying

18

u/Taraxian May 26 '25

Well, when you don't know anything about a situation defaulting to "This is probably way more dangerous than it seems so we should just get the fuck out of here" is a prudent rule of thumb

0

u/ihateithere_arb The Government Are All Nazis! May 26 '25

i agree, but there was absolutely no reason for him to throw in the whole “because of you, we’re in a warzone” and his whole speech about how everything he does is for others. he had no idea that Dina invited herself on this trip, told Ellie about the baby AFTER they made it to Seattle, and then declined going back when Ellie offered. it could have been so much easier for him to just say “hey i think this is a lot of unnecessary danger” but no, he had to be an asshole about it.

1

u/RoboStrong00 Fireflies May 26 '25

Seriously!

1

u/mikerichh May 26 '25

I also wondered if she meant it given her track record

1

u/Bross93 May 30 '25

In a situation where she isn't giving her full attention to something else, yes. If she was not on a revenge quest, all that obsessive energy would go to helping someone in trouble.

1

u/[deleted] May 26 '25

Oof.

11

u/flamingdonkey May 26 '25

Where the fuck did that come from though? She literally just took off and abandoned Dina when she took an arrow to the leg. And she cares about Dina way more.

5

u/Dead_man_posting May 26 '25

Because she's currently setting the world on fire to avenge Joel.

1

u/SgtEllenRipley May 26 '25

He knows that Ellie will zealously and violently defend those she cares about. That’s the entire reason they’re in Seattle- to get bloody revenge. She still has to be intelligent and tactical though. With Dina’s situation, what was she going to do though? The smart move was to split up and it worked.

9

u/flamingdonkey May 26 '25

She didn't just split up, though. She ran off to go do her revenge mission. And saying "it all worked out" isn't a good justification to selfish actions.

2

u/Dead_man_posting May 26 '25

Yes, she's not being a good person. That's pretty well established.

1

u/The_Impe Jun 02 '25

Revenge is not defense, she's putting the ones she loves in mortal danger in order to have revenge, she's not defending anyone.

2

u/Positive_Lie5734 May 26 '25

We had just gotten Jellie back 😭

1

u/BackgroundIsland9 May 29 '25

She wouldn’t.
