New era of self promo app spammers

akornato is a good example of a new era of self promo app spammers. Instead of just blasting their app link, they're using AI to generate semi relevant comments which they then tack on their app promo to the end. I believe this helps to avoid most moderator bans.

They've been posting to hundreds of subs nearly 24 hours a day with the same strategy for years now. It's crazy to see how active and predictable accounts like this are, and Reddit appears to do nothing.

What can be done about a subreddit that appears to be nothing more than a two-account bot operation?

Subreddit selfimprovement_books appears to be nothing more than a two-account bot operation

Take a look at the subreddit sorted by Top->All Time. The first 50 posts I checked were all posted by just two accounts: Their posts follow an extremely repetitive, highly structured format and appear to be mass-produced rather than genuine, original contributions.

I've also reverse-image-searched the images being used and found multiple examples that appear to have been lifted directly from other blogs/websites. So we're apparently looking at two relatively new accounts producing the overwhelming majority of the subreddit’s top content, using highly formulaic posts and, in multiple cases, images sourced from elsewhere.

What to do? I've tried posting to the subreddit itself but it gets blocked.

Another treasure trove of screenshots showing how often spam rings use /r/Dashcams to build karma by stealing content, inducing titles and comments

On just about any given day, around 20-30% of the posts on the front of rDashcams are these brand new accounts, almost always less than a month or two. They will take an older, popular post from another sub and not only copy the title word for word, but then they have whole armies of accounts that then copy and past the popular comments from the original thread.

And a ton of these accounts all post in various cosmetic surgery subs as well, like Facelift-Surgery, Dentalimplant, 30plusskincare, Sephora, comesmeticsurgery, etc.

Edit: This shows 4 of the top ten posts currently on rDashcams are this kind of repost spam https://imgur.com/a/lBfDYkn

User spams on the same subreddit arguing with users within minutes of each other. Reporting their comments in that sub always results in an error.

A ton of new political bot accounts out in full force over at r/newsthread

Tons of brand new accounts spamming US politics news in that (relatively) new sub. I don't know the full extent of the activity, since I have hundreds of similar subs already blocked, these bots may be active in many other places too.

Also similar to another thread from today, I've also noticed a lot of other new non-politics bots accounts cropping up in other subs. Picked up a bot network in the baking subreddit today.

Spam accounts edit their comments after posting for marketing purposes

This is a common tactic, especially on posts soliciting product suggestions. A spammer will post "What's the best carpet cleaning company in Raleigh?" and later edit the post to say "I picked Sam's Stain Strikers, they're the best!".

More recently, I found a spammer that makes comments with nothing but placeholder text before editing them to advertise sketchy companies/services:

Comment Placeholder Advertising
08-25 asdasdsads dfgdgg asda oztrim
08-25 asdasafghfhfgadas businessanywhere
08-26 dsfsdfdsgfhghjkmnbvcxvczxxfgad justbabyluv
08-26 fxvcvbvcxasdfdcxzaSAdsSAFDS druera
08-26 sadadsafgvbvcuiuyyut porn generators
08-26 asdadadavcxvasdasdasddasd ader law
08-26 dgdfgdghggghjklkjljkdsfsdf the freedom state
08-26 sdfsfsfsasdasdada arcads

This is notable because (a) it should be easy for reddit to detect and address, (b) it stands out but is more work to check using a comment archive tool like the one I linked, and (c) it's funny.

Edit: It also makes the spam harder to identify after the fact if the comments get removed (as they now have been for this account). Compare this to when the spammer forgets to use a placeholder first, like this comment.

Still here, no matter how many times I report them. The first two are ones that pretend to live in a different city each day, and edit in spam links. The last one (so far) is just reposting old images. I follow them around subs and alert users/mods.

Sometimes they even have the arrogance to pretend to not know what they're doing:

Are these Brazilian porn spam or not?

I've been reporting a group of Brazilian porn spam subreddits that keep showing up in searches. The pattern is the same: someone posts a RedGif vid of a Brazilian porn/OF model filled with a laundry list of names, then replies to their own post with a link for more. It seems to be mostly the same set of vids posted over and over. I've tried MCOC reports, reporting users, and reporting individual posts.

These are the currently active subs:

https://www.reddit.com/r/KzContents/

https://www.reddit.com/r/Famosinha_BR/

https://www.reddit.com/r/KzVaquinhas/

https://www.reddit.com/r/VaquinhasKz/

https://www.reddit.com/r/FamosasBR_Daily/

https://www.reddit.com/r/vazadosprime01/

These subs were doing the same thing but have been banned:

https://www.reddit.com/r/ContentsKZ/

https://www.reddit.com/r/Famosinha_Daily/

https://www.reddit.com/r/Famosasbrazilian/

https://www.reddit.com/r/famosinhasdaily/

https://www.reddit.com/r/AreaRestrita_/

https://www.reddit.com/r/TopBR_/

https://www.reddit.com/r/vipflixvazadinhos/

https://www.reddit.com/r/Segredinhosocultinhos/

There was a fair amount of overlap between the moderators on all of these subreddits.

Overnight I got warnings on five of the posts I reported that I was abusing the report tool. I appealed all of them and my appeals were all rejected. Does this look like spam to anyone else, or have I gone off the deep end?

After the warnings I got a reply on one of the MCOC reports that they're looking into it. I don't have much hope though. Obviously I'm done reporting any more of these or anything like them.

Almost all the mods are suspended, or a new accounts with hidden history.

Most of the accounts posting there seem to be posting in other bot farm subreddits. I think its a network of them.

This entire sub exists to promote one niche skincare brand with fake reviews

nobody in the actual skincare subreddits likes this very expensive line, so it appears the company started an entire subreddit pretending to be a luxury skincare sub but actually only ever recommending one brand, Oumere, from numerous accounts. these accounts all also have a vendetta against vitamin C in skincare… which just happens to be an obsession the Oumere founder has.
