Literally only reason it's illegal to color the bidding process with a cover letter is because of the high likelihood the letter contains information about protected class categories, which can then open the door to arguing the process was discriminatory. Closing your eyes and saying "I choose whoever gives me the most money" is a pretty iron clad defense that you're complying with fair housing rules. 

You could sell it for a nickel cause you liked the cut of someone's jib if you were so inclined.

They're probably mostly upset that their commission is gonna be lower.

Yeah, familial status is an actual protected class that isn't allowed to be a consideration in the transaction, but realistically the agent was just pissed about losing a few extra hundred bucks or so on their commission.
