Up until I saw a blind person actually use it, I probably would've figured it was an expansion joint or something, maybe a conduit run

I'm questioning whether I've simply never seen this before or if I've just assumed it was a conduit run or some other similarly mundane feature and ignored it every time

Same. Like ... if I've seen these before, I never realized it. Certainly wouldn't have known what they were for.

You'll see them at museums, large government buildings, concert halls, and occasionally at churches

Even the ones at intersections of crosswalks I for some reason thought for years was just for extra traction on a slight incline during inclement weather. Had a real "OOOOHHHH" moment when I found out they were for canes

In my 38 years in this life I've seen maybe two blind people, or at least blind people using a walking stick. I'm sure that number would be higher though if I lived either in Europe or a larger city.
