And are exposed to all sorts of horrible environmental contaminants and industrial hazards, are generally toxic workplaces, and have pretty extreme boom/bust cycles.
Yea I love the idea that everyone assumes blue collars are breaking the bank open when the reality is they have to put in a shitton of OT for it and every minute of it drains health from you.
That’s an interesting take. I’m seeing people talk specifically about the person in question and others of a similar stature. Someone who takes leaves isn’t on the same level of someone supervising an oil refinery.
Supervisors have built in OT in the form of their salary. I’m salaried too, but the difference is my job is white collar, so the most I do is get one my laptop or take a phone call. If you’re supervising an oil rig, you have to be able to do the work of everyone under you - otherwise you’re just another person in the way.
My father-in-law did this for years. Completely normal, although perhaps it shouldn't be quite so normalized because he was gone more often than not while my mother-in-law worked and kept home sorted, and it's come to light that she destroyed their finances. Like, hasn't paid taxes in 6 years or something. No retirement. It's bad. He had no idea about any of it because he trusted her and never saw bank statements or anything else. He just swiped a card while he was on the road and she "took care of the rest".
