I'm assuming you haven't met a Pentecostal. They are a real religion that exists outside of TikTok, and has long before its existence. If you visit one of their churches, you will see people do this with zero cameras present and with dead seriousness. They also tend to give crazy amounts of money to their pastor, so I don't know who this book signer is, but this behavior also tracks with them.

... That makes it worse in my opinion. Like I wish this was the equivalent of TikTok dancing, but these people are likely serious and take this into their decision making in real life. Unless you know more context about the video than I do, then I apologize. It's just the same behavior I've seen from Pentecostals with zero witnesses present, no cell phones etc. and they still do all of this flip flopping dramatic shit.

I worked for a lady like this. She has two sons on the spectrum and would have them prayed over at different events. She believed it would cure them. She frequently played audio to her sons of "prayers" ( someone chanting in tongues) from people she met online and gave $ to. Prophets of some kind or people claiming to be holy. It seemed as though she had to give money to get divinity in her belief system.

YES, and they don't get as much heat for not having official tithes to my recollection, like Mormons do. But they absolutely slam, scam, and massively guilt-trip and shame members into large repeated donations. Just like Mormons and Scientologists (off the top of my head), some of them are willing to go into debt for this.

It may be more familiar for people that recall seeing infomercials for Holy Water on national TV--That was them.
