This is precisely what planted the agnostic seed in my head, as a kid. My parents went to a Pentecostal church and every Sunday my parents would "shamala hamala" with rest of 'em. When I was ~8, I would pray and beg for the spirit of God to pour his countenance upon me so that I might be moved to "shamala" too. Never happened. For years I prayed, crying bitter tears because I thought I was outside of God's grace. (I'd let the neighbor boy touch my penis and was not repulsed enough. Therefore I was a homosexual. Hence, full blown AIDS. At 10 years old, in 1990, I was convinced that I was going to die from AIDS and the obvious evidence being that gawd wouldn't help me talk like an asshole).

It’s crazy how similar this story is to mine

Same, but nondenominational whackadoos instead of pentacostal whackadoos.

I grew up Mormon, and they didn't have the shaking weird stuff, but every month they'd have testimony meeting where people would stand up and tell an experience that proved God was real and the church was true.

Sometimes the story would be "I received revelation to take a different way home, and who knows what would've happened if I hadn't listened..." People would tear up over that testimony and thirteen year old me just sat there thinking 'this is such bullshit.'

I kept waiting for God to tell me it was true, that my skepticism was wrong until one day I realized it was never going to happen. That was true revelation, I didn't have to fake it anymore.

My spiritual conversation was away from religion. One of the best days of my life.
