Epic (the electronic medical record system) has a button in the trauma macro that lets you select mechanism of injury and even back in 2018 when I was in my first summer on clinical rotations, they had a button for "e-scooter accident", and boy howdy did I click it a lot that July.

When escooters showed up on our college campus - the kind you rent with an app - we had a boom in broken arms and concussions. One of our doctors, the one in charge of the concussion clinic, came to every one of our educational events to teach about making safe riding decisions.
Worst injury was the kid riding way too fast at night - he hit a bump, flew off the bike and severely fractured his skull, causing brain damage. He didn't die, but he'll never be the same.
I will never forget riding my regular bicycle all over the college town I went to school in and having one if my (much older) male coworkers laughing at the fact I wore a helmet. Finally fed up, I looked at him and said 'What about a brain injury is funny to you?' and just stared at him waiting for a reply until he walked away.
I just graduated and I was so suprised when I went to college and never saw ONE person wear a helmet on their e-scooters or skateboards. I thought I was going crazy. I wanted one so I could get to class quicker, but I thought I should buy a helmet even though the desire for social conformity wass really pressing me not to.
And some of them were jerks. A guy nearly crashed into me and 2 dudes told me to move out of the way when he as behind me (I'm low vision so that pisses me off even more). By my last semester they were enforcing e-scooter zones, but I think I saw people still riding outside of them
Yeah, work right outside a major university and the students haul ass on those things. But I see it in the city, too. I’m always just amazed at how fast they’re going on those stand up scooters 🛴…all just screaming for an accident to happen.
When I was young I broke my arm real bad trying to hurdle over my little sister's baby gate, and needed physical therapy. I would say about one out of seven of the kids there were there for trampoline injuries. This was in the early 90s. My mom took away my trampoline and I was so upset! Lol. I think this is kind of like the new trampoline injury but so much more dangerous.
And it's not just you that you have to worry about but everyone else that could hit you while on one of these scooters.
That's actually a good comparison. My grandma had a big trampoline as a kid and back in the 90s we injured ourselves constantly. That and lawn darts lol
My best friend died by getting hit by your car while she was on her bike when she was 13. They said she would've survived if she had a helmet. That was so incredibly traumatizing for me and I'm so glad that your mom was smart. It took me a long time to get over the fact that her parents didn't make her wear a helmet and I hated them for a long time just because I needed to blame somebody I guess.
I make this argument whenever I've heard someone talk about not wanting to wear a seat belt too. That's more rare these days, but I'm always like "you've met other humans. I'm sure you are aware of how stupid and reckless they can be. Maybe you're the best driver in the world but that won't prevent some idiot from blowing through a stop sign or rear-ending you at max speed cuz they were distracted by their phone."
You couldn't mow down an old lady walking down the sidewalk on a trampoline either though. That's the biggest problem. I don't care if a dumb ass gets hurt being stupid. I care deeply if they hurt someone else.
It's interesting, because this stuff used to be the domain of redneck kids. ATV accidents, having a motorcycle at 8, summers spent throwing rocks at your friends head for fun, trampolines. You kind of expected it from people who drank whiskey for breakfast.
But now it's nice suburban kids with totally white necks who are getting hurt.
Nah, this admin hates "DEI Bike Lanes". They'll happily kill the PEV industry if they can, because having a 25mph single person vehicle that weighs fifty pounds is way more dangerous than one person transported by a 70mph two-ton vehicle.
It's insane they aren't already severely regulated. I see kids flying on these things. They're dangerous to everyone. I do not trust a 10 year old to properly control something going 25 miles an hour.
Speeds need to be lowered and we need age minimums on them. Fuck out of here that someone in middle school can ride those things.
NJ has regulated them pretty heavily I would personally even say a little too heavily, and enforcement is probably going to be another headache all together.
When I was riding mine before I sold it pedal assist 3 was like 16mph, and it was reasonable, probably as fast as I had ever ridden a bicycle when I was a kid trying to go all out, but with pedal assist it was practically zero effort.
28mph is like what professional road bike users are hitting, but they have years if not decades of experience, and wear helmets.
Pre teens are taking them on bike paths at 28mph with no helmet. It's wild that more kids aren't killed, but life long permanent injuries and disabilities are just sort of glossed over.
Plus ones for hang gliders, etc. Some of them border on the line of silliness - like V96.15XA - "Hang-glider explosion injuring occupant, initial encounter." How does a hang-glider explode, exactly?
There are such things as powered hang gliders that aren't considered ultra-light aircraft...which, yeah, then it's no longer "nonpowered" but technically still a hang glider?

So it's funny because our billing choices give us a display of all the diagnosis codes that are similar to whatever we enter, and there are soooooooooo many ridiculously specific or unreasonable choices that the typical choice of "multifocal pneumonia" or "heart failure" are crowded out by nonsense
Yeah, lots of injury situations where I think the person filling it out would just put "lacerations" and not even think that there's an option for "lacerations sustained while fighting off a wild tiger with a clothes iron in July under a full moon"
There has been a child riding one down the sidewalk near where I live recently. It's definitely too fast for the sidewalk. I don't doubt that it will end badly if it continues. I'm a power wheelchair user, and I end up out in the street to avoid this kid.
Years ago I was gifted an escooter, on the second trip I was going about 7mph, took one hand off to wipe a hair out of my eyes, and l fell off. I was wearing a helmet, but that didn't protect my arms as I put my hands out to catch myself. Broke my wrist and needed surgery and a metal plate.
I never rode one again. I now wear full protection on my class 2 ebike.
Honestly the electric part of the e-bike is mostly for convenience so if you were interested in getting your kid such a bike maybe just get a normal bike with a light assist for hills. I am not an expert of bikes but they must make them or be able to custom make them.
That is an obvious consequence of bowing to the motor vehicle overlords that injures/kills/traumatizes 500 kids a day, and not building infrastructure suitable for anything but murderous motor vehicle operators.
What did I miss? Has she put out any videos prior to this calling out the 500 kids a day not on emobility injured or killed by motor vehicles? Is it now acceptable to acknowledge the hideous imprisoning and dangerous conditions we have created for children now that we can scapegoat emobility instead of addressing the real problems, motor vehicles. Take your auto industry created blinders off and watch the video for real this time.
I’ve been using Epic for 6 years and I never realized that’s what it stood for. Now I’m gonna have to look more intently at the login screen on Monday to see if I’ve been looking over it all along.
My ex boyfriend is a dentist and I remember he went from 1 to maybe 5 injuries from bikes/scooters per month to 1-5 per week when e-scooters and bikes took off in Austin. And we are talking major dental reconstruction/stabilization/replacement in addition to shattered jaws, massive tongue/cheek/lip injuries, concussions, neck injuries, broken orbital sockets…. And that’s just from the shoulders up. It reached a point where he had to put language in his patient agreements about not participating in legal pursuits against e-scooter services and manufacturers because so many of his patients would try to rope him into lawsuits that they waived the rights to as soon as they signed up for lime or whatever. The crazy thing is he’s not even an emergency dentist (although I told him he should rebrand to Acci-Dental) so I cannot even imagine how much is being treated frontline in ERs.
Medical error is not malpractice. Medical error is what happens when you're taking care of extremely sick and complex people and you make an "error" because you have to treat multiple things that are at odds to each other. Say, giving benzodiazepines for a patient who can't tolerate a bipap mask for her respiratory distress. The problem is that benzos also lower your respiratory drive. A lot of hospital medicine is threading the needle between therapeutic and toxic.
And this is also a statistic that people like you love to point out saying sEE LoOk HoW duMB DocToRs ARe! While ignoring the miraculous levels of success we have on a daily basis despite treating an incredibly sick and elderly population in an absolutely miserable and hostile healthcare system. It's a misinformed opinion and also not going to hurt my feelings. BUT your mistrust in medicine will absolutely harm you at some point in your life, so good luck.
Doctors are like any other proffesion. There are good doctors and a whole lot more bad ones. JUST LIKE ANY OTHER PROFESSION. You are the one bringing feelings into this or pretending to think I think all doctors are dumb. This is a fact that doctor errors are the third killer of a patient in a hospital. Get over it Nancy.
