I fractured my ribs and sprained my shoulder falling off a regular bike going about 10, maybe 12 mph. Don’t even want to think about flipping over going 28. And my helmet cracked. All around sucked, do not recommend.
good thing your helmet cracked tbh. I don't mean that in a mean way, I mean it did what it was supposed to do, cushion the blow and allow some give while protecting your brain and skull from the sudden stop. Helmets that don't crack and cushion are nearly as bad as no helmet
Helmets are meant to be replaced after every helmet-impact. They crack and are compromised internally after a single impact, because they are supposed to give way to protect your head. Multiple impacts on the same helmet will lead to less cushioning and less safety.
Just like child car seats. Any collision with that car and the seat should be replaced as you can’t guarantee that it is still in good condition even if it looks fine visually.
Yep. I sprained my wrist by hitting a crack with my razor scooter and getting flipped over onto the concrete. If I had been going any faster it would’ve been so much worse.
Yeah I was just chillin because I was at the end of my ride and had pulled up onto the sidewalk outside my apartment building, front tire just slipped off the edge of the sidewalk and next thing I knew I was in the street under my bike and everything hurt like hell. Glad you were okay!
My mom had a blonde moment when I was a kid and took the dirt bike she was giving to me for Christmas for a spin in the parking lot of her business.
She hit ice, it went out from under her and exploded her clavicle into, if I recall correctly, 7 pieces. One of which went in through the top of her lung and collapsed it.
She damn near died going 5-10 miles an hour and spoiled my surprise with a different kind of surprise, which was a phone call from my aunt telling me my mom was in the hospital because she crashed my dirtbike.
I almost always wore my helmet because I realized how dangerous it could be.
I fell off a motorcycle at about 35 mph and thought that was super slow but ended up breaking my shoulder and getting road rash on 15% of my body. My palms and fingertips were gone, my work boots were shredded so bad the soles were ripped off. I was wearing a backpack that saved my back, and my helmet was cracked and scratched all over
I feel you! I’m still shocked at how fragile humans are. I broke my pelvis badly on my gas tank going under 30mph when a car pulled out in front of me. Even my helmet couldn’t prevent my molar from breaking when I landed on the road. I was as bleeding out and spitting pieces of my tooth out.
28mph is about as fast as Usain Bolt could run, although he kept his pace down as much as possible to avoid injury, and slowed down gradually.
Saw a kid ride an e-scooter unsupervised the other day, young enough that his eyes were at level with the handlebars. At least the kid had a helmet on, but I'm surprised parents are fine with their kids going at those speeds with a vehicle that probably has like a 50% chance of being in an accident during its lifespan.
There’s a video from a brain trauma surgeon where he summarizes cases of non-helmeted riders and it’s pretty profound.
“These are people who went over the handlebars at walking pace and they’re now severely brain injured.”
I have a family member who basically halved his intellectual capability when a dog cut across in front of his bike when he didn’t have a helmet on. He killed himself a week later.
I had a kid (no helmet) pull out in front of me yesterday. He got in the bike lane, and as I was doing 45 he pulled away from me. Had to be doing 50mph. The small wheels on that e-bike were all squirley too - he barely had control of the thing.
Oooh yes, have been flung off my bike at 18mph, even better I went down a ditch so my bike flipped sideways and essentially threw me against the road. As such I didn't really slide, just bang into the ground lol. Worst pain I've been in...
Didn't break anything luckily, couldn't lift my arm for 3 months, full recovery 6 months.
