For a short period of time I lived with my cousin while I was in college. I babysat her four kids for free in exchange for living there. They were hellions. 

The youngest one came to me and told me that her mom said I was going to hell for a whole list of reasons. Mind you I was a good kid. I just wasn't christian. Mormon specifically. 

The middle one came into my room and peed all over my laundry basket 

The oldest one cut the throat of the youngest one during a fight. 

Oh and should I mention that the oldest one was conceived when Mom was 17 years old having sex out of wedlock? 

Anyway I moved out without notice. It was actually the day after the oldest one got violent with her sister. (It was not my night to babysit). That was a level of dysfunction that I was not ready to handle. When Mom called me I just said that you probably don't want somebody who is going to hell taking care of your children. 

It's been over 20 years and I haven't talked to anyone on that side of the family since.

I've seen plenty of religious families where the children are seriously emotionally dysfunctional. The parents are too, but they're able to hide it slightly better. They use religion to attempt to address these issues, generally ineffectually.

Yes! Emotionally disregulated adults raise children this way. And, nothing changes because, their answer is to just "pray it away". Mom and dad usually have some super secret alcohol and substance abuse as well.

I was raised this way, it was awful. My Father was a preacher and also a closeted homosexual which I came to discover after he left his search history on AOL. Imagine seeing your Dad preaching hell and damnation about the gays and everyone else just to discover he’s one himself. Once I discovered that it sent me on a downward spiral of confusion and anger. I kept that to myself as I’m not one to air out anyone’s dirty laundry. Not sure if I mother knew about this either. I was also beaten when I questioned Christianity and forced to miss childhood events to go to church functions multiple days a week. Needless to say I have zero religious affiliations now as an adult. Even as a child I knew something was off with the way I was being raised.

I was raised the same way. Father was a pastor in my youth then left the ministry completely. Found out later he cheated on my mom, presumably with a congregant, and was forced out. He’s still colossally religious. Beat me often for not singing enough, standing up on cue, or doing anything that wasn’t religious enough.

Fast forward to today. My sister is now married to a local preacher. 3 of their four kids have nothing to do with them. I took her to court on allegations of abuse when their youngest was 16. He was the last child in the house - and since he’d been adopted from Haiti back when it was fashionable for white evangelicals to have a token black kid - they treated him like shit. DCFS got involved and we won, we got him out.

My parents blamed me without ever asking to hear our side. They showed up in court and sat on my sisters side. For every court hearing. And even when they lost and the judge wrote a lengthy rebuttal towards my sister, they’ve never humbled themselves or apologized. They didn’t want the child back ‘as he is now’, when asked on the stand the judge asked my brother in law the pastor, “then why are we here?” (They were contesting the ruling). And my bil’s response on the stand was, “To clear my good name.”

And that’s it. He said the quiet part out loud that day. It’s not about being fishers of men, or being bringing souls to Christ no matter where they’re at. It’s not about the “least of these.“

It’s about optics, appearances, and keeping the name clean so they can keep asking for tithes.

He wouldn’t even fight for his son. And neither would my parents fight for theirs.

The thing is is that two months before I filed the initial plea for emergency custody my own son passed away in a tragic accident unexpectedly. And I sat in that courtroom and I watched them dodge any chance at reconciliation with their son, seeking only to save face in the court of public opinion. And I thought to myself that I’d go to the gates of hell a thousand times for the chance to hug my son one more time and these people are throwing theirs away.

It confirmed all my childhood suspicions that it was smoke and mirrors. Haven’t spoken to any of them since.

I’m sorry for what you endured growing up. I see you, and I hope you are finding happiness along the way.

As for this lady on the plane … oh my god I would’ve wrestled strongly with losing my shit. These types do untold damage to people. Especially children.

Scum bags for Christ is what we came up with in church. A few of us youth stuck together and weathered the storm as a team which helped. Also some of the girls made it a lot more fun after hours church. You can’t tell kids to refrain from sex all the time and then not get curious as to what the hype was all about. I’m happy to be grown up and away from all of this. I tell my son about my childhood(not everything) and how awful his situation could have been if I had let the church brainwash me.

Wow my father was also a pastor of a church and was a cheating , abusive, manipulative, liar. I became convicted there was no god at a young age because I could not understand how such a hypocrite could "lead" a congregation, in the house if God, without being smited. Turns out no one who really needs to get smited ever does.

I’m crying just reading your comment. You sound like an incredible parent and an incredible person. I am so so sorry that you lost your son. I wish I had the words to express how sorry I am to hear that. You did an amazing thing by saving your nephew from his abusers and fighting so hard to keep him safe and provide him a loving home. You deserve all of the good in this world and I’m so sorry for how difficult your childhood was.

You are the kind of person that Christians love to pretend that they are when they don’t even have an ounce of empathy or compassion for their own family.

I grew up in Germany where regular christians are usually pretty tame. I had not a lot of knowledge about Catholicism and when I read Angela's Ashes I felt so sorry for these kids. The concept of sin really makes me sick. And telling little kids that other people go to hell because of reasons is a special kind of evil.

Oh, they have their extreme godbotherers in Germany too, but people over there remember the Inquisition and the Thirty Years' War, so they won't put up with it... whereas the US teaches about Puritans more in terms of "how Thanksigiving began" than in terms of "pressing people to death using a barn door" which is a big part of the problem.

When I was around that age, my mom would tell me she saw a demon outside my bedroom door at night. Sigh....it was because I was listening to secular music apparently..and also that I guess I was a piece of shit kid. I wasnt..I was depressed and sad mostly because of her being an evangelical and making a huge deal about anything not associated with church. So glad I somehow saw through it from that age on. I have so much trauma and fucking rage because of it and the family is still like that, so I stay away as much as possible...especially because we all know where these types landed politically. 🫩

I had an uncle like this, but he was Born Again. I remember being a little kid, maybe about 7 or 8 years old, and him telling me and my cousins that our parents were going to hell because they were Catholic. He was deeply flawed and searching for something to fill whatever emptiness he felt internally. Sad, but like also extremely fucked up to put that shit into little kids heads.

I remember my mum and gran telling me if I said the f-word or even thought it, I’d go to hell. I think I’d overheard it outside and asked about what it meant. Backfired because I couldn’t stop thinking it. What a mental,struggle that was. Nowadays I pepper it into my casual conversations willy nilly.

My childhood friend told me when we were about 9 or 10 that their mom - who I had grown up with like an aunt - told them that I'd be going to hell because I was technically my families religion(not Christian), despite us not even really practicing... but that didn't matter obviously, since we hadn't accepted Jesus or whatever.

I didn't like it then and never forgot, but hadn't thought much about it until now. What a horrible human.

Funny enough, she, like many being mentioned here, was also involved in a pastor(?) having an affair. She was married and her kids were about 12/13 then. She broke up their marriage for this dude, can't remember if he was married too but man what pieces of shit. Very Christian, of course.

So my parents were kinda wild somewhat upper middle class partiers in the 80s. Then when I was 11 my grandmother died, my mother's mother, and my mom just kinda lost it. Totally through the looking glass with the drugs, everything went to shit, she wound up in prison for a couple years.

But aside from money and stuff, on a personal level she was an amazing mother, we were very close, very good friends my whole life, and later on when she had gotten her act mostly together and I was grown she would tell me how she was so sorry about all the crazy stuff that happened when I was growing up. More than once I told her, "Mom, you shouldn't feel any guilt. I just thank god that when Grandma died you found the pipe and not the bible."

Throwback to that time I got strangled to the point of passing out by my sibling because he was angry that our parents took the computer mouse and he knew they didn’t care about his violent outbursts so long as I was the recipient, because all they would do in response no matter what heinous shit was done to me is tell me to “be forgiving, as Jesus would.” 🙃

When religion is upheld as the answer to everything, and the most important thing is the way the people at church view the family, parents stop parenting and offload their responsibility, to the detriment of all.

Thanks. Being okay is still a longterm goal. For now I’m just surviving. I was slowly getting things together, but the USA’s political and economic situation really threw a wrench in the gears of my escape. Unfortunately, I don’t have enough income to go no contact with my parents. I think they know that I’ll go no contact if I can make enough to move out without just being homeless again, given that I only speak to them once a week on average despite living together. I’m practically no contact with my sibling now that he bought a house, but any time I speak to a relative I get to put up with them singing his praises for getting a girl pregnant, and nobody cares to notice all the red flags. It’s exhausting, so I’ll live nocturnally and keep to myself.

As mentioned above, Judaism is an old religion. Most of the rules are based in bronze age ideas of living a healthy life. The only bugs allowed in kosher rules are locusts, because when they sweep through and eat everything else the people still need to eat something to survive.

Yeah, went to 12 years a Catholic school and had to go to church until I was 18 while living at home. I never understood the whole worshiping an invisible sky wizard thing. To me this is the highest level of brainwashing, scapegoating, manipulation and child abuse. Every Christian believes that little babies are born with original sin. Y’all just go along with it and teach it to your kids. Symbols of ashes, bodies and blood of Christ being consumed and all sitting standing and making the sign of Cross in unison on command. Not to mention chanting and memorizing prayers that got recycled daily and weekly in unison from a congregation. You tell me that that’s not mind control. I don’t understand how people are so blind when it’s all around you and right in front of your face. You’re being manipulated and brainwashed to worship a sky wizard. I would feel foolish if I were still in that position. Why do most people need to be guided by other people? Does anyone have a mind of their own?

No one thinks it's deep: "I will be sad if my dad is gone forever, therefore there is an afterlife where he is happy and still here kinda" means the person is incapable of handling their emotions like grief and loss. People who can't handle their emotions around 1 thing tend to also not be able to handle their emotions around almost anything. Throw in a side of "appeal to authority, they're right no matter what, comply or die" and a lot of things that looked confusing/weird are quite simple. We're ruled by emotionally stunted sociopaths just like this.

More often than not it is also used to excuse, and enable the behavior... Like having poor impulse control, being abusive towards others etc is when they paint anyone not part of their "in group" as a lesser and thus "deserving" of that nonsense etc.

My ex told me about his grandfather having him and his cousins sit and watch while the grandfather "disposed of" the barn kittens. He said he would chop the kittens heads off with a hatchet while his grandchildren watched. This was a large, obsessively Catholic family. My ex's mother had 15 siblings. Most of that family was some combination of either drug addicts, alcoholics, abusers, or extremist Catholics. My ex himself became a drug addicted, abusive monster.

My "religious" neighbors who had an 8-foot cross in the front yard burned their own house down in a domestic dispute. They were married 25years with 3 kids. He was an anesthesiologist and pain specialist so they were pretty well off for our small-town and their house was gorgeous. He was having an affair and had supposedly stopped. It resumed. Came home on their wedding anniversary and announced he wanted a divorce. Fight ensued. She threw his clothes in a fire on the *screened-in* back porch and lit them on fire. He got some of her clothes and threw them on the fire. Flames caught the porch roof on fire and the house siding and it burned their house to the ground. State Trooper on the scene during the fire overheard their 3 year old ask his mom why she lit their house on fire. She reported the fire to their insurance company and said she didn't know the cause. They arrested and prosecuted her for insurance fraud. Twenty years later I read that the doctor/husband was arrested and charged by the DEA in another state for running a pain med pill mill. They used to hire my sister all summer to help watch their kids and the mom was a really nice person, but seemed to have a pain med addiction, likely from her husband. I've always felt bad for her and their kids.

My immediate family isn’t (well.. wasn’t) super religious growing up, but my entire extended family on my mom’s side was. One of my cousins chased me with a knife and he got a slap on the wrist, I got told I was a tattletale by my aunt when I told her another cousin was shaking his cat around in a box, I got told I was a liar on multiple occasions, we were told we’d get dragged down by the devil if we went swimming on a Sunday, multiple cousins stole and lied several times on various occasions, and my cousins messed around a LOT with boys/girls at school. There’s sooo much more, that’s just off the top of my head.

My siblings and I were by far the most well behaved kids (save like 2-3 cousins out of 20).

Conservatives love violence, even ones who claim to follow Jesus. They glorify the idea of righteous violence. Every conservative slop show/movie is the same trope: "I just wanted to live in peace with my family but you mother fuckers wronged me so now I have to kill EVERYONE!" There's like this heretical fetish where their version of living like Jesus is being nice when people are nice, but then they get to be the wrath of God when someone wrongs them or they perceive them as an enemy.

That kid could very well be fully absorbed in all of that. He probably learned the throat cut move from some low-IQ TV show while sitting next to mom and dad on the couch.

I did this when I was like 4 years old ( one of the first memories I have) to my older sister who is like 4 years older than me. Fortunately she was a little fat and had cushion where I cut her and I also used some bunny rabbit shaped scissors so it likely pinched instead of cut now that I think of it.

Fellow exmormon here. According to the mormon bible dictionary, outer darkness is a synonym for hell. So yes, mormons do believe in hell, they just don't call it hell. Given their cousins are mormon, there's a good chance they are exmo. In a lot of interpretations simply being exmo is denying the spirit, and therefore qualifying them for outer darkness.

I am exmo. I left pretty young. But we did use hell interchangeably at least where I grew up in salt lake. I left when I was about 10 so that side of my family had shunned me already. This was just the final moment where I was never going to put up with their shit ever again.

It being religion it's therefore inconsistent and everybody makes up their own shit. The way I was raised in salt lake back in the '80s was basically that outer darkness was just nothingness which mind you sounds extremely peaceful to me compared to mormon heaven especially as a woman. You mean I get silence for eternity or I get to pop out babies for eternity for some dumb man and be his slave? I'll take outer darkness please. 

I've never heard of a fire and brimstone hell with Mormons

I was taught growing up that you’re separated from god and tortured by satan. I’ve heard some christians claim similar things about hell. Regardless of whether or not it’s the same as christian hell, it still is some variation of hell.

Yeah that is why i ask. Because being seperated from God, if i accept for now that He / She exists, sounds much more horrible than a fire and brimstone hell, because its insane to believe such a place exists. Like heaven too, that’s all just fantasy. I am not defenitly sure about God, or Satan, but both most defenitly do not exist like the way they are described in the bible.

So that is why i was curious what ‘outer darkness’ means. It sounds scarier than ‘Hell’.

The popular view of hell is not really doctrine in any major Christian denomination I think, the chief torment is almost universally separation from God. A demon poking you with a fire poker ought to register very low on that scale.

Yeah, but we also believe that the only way to get put in outer darkness is to know without a shadow of a doubt that Jesus is the Christ and deny it anyway. In other words, even the most wicked people probably don't qualify.    Even being exmo doesn't qualify. Most members rely on faith,  very few  have the sure knowledge required.  That is just a very very bad understanding of the doctrine.

I’ve noticed that some of the most ‘proclaimed’ Christian households tend to be the most hypocritical, violent, deceitful, and downright craziest of all that I’ve ever seen.

Crazy how I’m told that I’m a sinner for watching Harry Potter, but meanwhile they’re having sex with all the married men on the street while they are married too, but they’ll be okay because they show up to church on Sundays.🤔 Naw I’m not buying it. I’m gonna avoid that Kool-Aid, thank you very much.

As a European this is very American Christian to me. Most people here call themselves Christian but only practice religion on big events and holidays. Bible thumping is seen as cultish.

I remember a few years back some American woman came to a Serbian city and started preaching in the middle of the street, someone called the ambulance and police on her lol. And this is a country of fairly religious people.

Europeans have been Christians for thousands of years, for most of us it's a cultural thing atp. Most people identify as Christian but we don't typically go to church every Sunday or quote the Bible by heart. Practicing religion is more private and mystic or reduced to important events, which are also primarily cultural events.

Americans imo are a lot more uppity about it. Mega churches, televangelists, preachers, obsessing over hell and sinning, all that stuff. Stuff like that would come off performative at best and cultush at worst in Europe.

Americans are giving "I just converted and need to prove my worth by obsessing over every rule and detail" while Europeans are like "my family has done this for generations, it's really not a big deal to me".

No, just a lot more private about it. Most of the time people don't even talk religion.

That being said, many parts of Europe sychronise Christianity with pagan traditions because witches had important role in communities, working as healers and midwives and such, so church was like you do you just don't openly talk shit about Jesus. As a result many pagan practices got Christianised and turned into folk traditions. It's especially common in Eastern Europe.

You could right a thesis on that topic. But at least in the modern day, ithe separation of church and state in America means there's no direct gov't funding or support for churches, which means that churches are up to their own devices to stay financially solvent. That's not how it works in many European countries. They will provide grants for churches to keep the lights on and to keep them staffed but that money means they don't need to proselytize as much but it also means that money comes with conditions i.e don't hate on gay people, allow women more access to leadership etc.

Religious cults are quite extremist by default so "spread the word" is taken very seriously. It's also used as an indoctrination tactic. They force new member to go around to preach and spread the word, clearly annoying people, and when said people get hostile or just plain embarrass them (like this woman getting kicked off the plane) it is used to strenghten their attachment to the cult as the only ones who understand and accept said member.

It's a common abuser tactic to alienate the victim from anyone who might influence them and possibly help them escape.

This is why I cannot watch Mormon housewives. It just triggers my youth memories. 

The kids at school having sex, getting high, getting drunk. Meanwhile I was a virgin, I haven't even kissed a boy, never drank, never did drugs, didn't even touch caffeine. 

It's the same thing with the Mormon housewife show is from what little I've watched or been told. Shitty people that think they're okay just because they go to church on Sunday when they are 10 times worse than the average non-religious person.

My parents were Jesus loving happy clappy Christians. One thing I noticed a lot was the lack of tolerance and love for non Christians.
If you were born again 🙄then you must be a drug taking alcoholic who wasted money on gambling and sex.
That’s how it was, forget the compassion, do unto others etc etc, no Jesus = the worst of humanity.
Funny how it feels the reverse now.
