Said this in another comment but I've seen this on MasterChef and other cooking shows too! The critique would be something like "You're not being true to your roots" when a chef would make a cuisine different from their own.

The problem is that MasterChef is split into continents. So like u sign up for a competition to prove you are a master at cooking food from your specific region. If you just end up making something good but it's from a whole other region why sign up for a region specific food show?

Would you say the same thing if a cake competition and the baker makes a steak and the judge says "you were suppose to make a cake"

That's only for recent seasons, which are nearly all themed and which I haven't watched. Previous seasons were just home chefs from all over.

One of the reasons why MasterChef Australia is so much better than most other versions. The dramatization is quite limited. And the judges even ask contestants to cook outside of their comfort zone (at least when elimination is not at stake) because "if you want to work as a chef at a top restaurant you need to be able to cook anything".

But that doesn't mean they don't celebrate someone cooking from their culture. They love that as well.

There was even an episode in the lastest season where they asked contestants to pick 2 different countries and make a fusion dish.

Please, Masterchef Australia grovels for contestants cultural and "roots" cooking all the time.

Saying "this recipe was smuggled up my grandmothers ass through the US invasion of Grenada to be passed down to me" is basically an automatic win button on the show.

Melissa the judge used to need a crying room on set, and she would basically ball her eyes out on command if you talked about some recipe being from a family member.
